Icl Stormzy really was the best leader in this. When he was at the forefront….the scene felt united, supportive, and actually moving at pace. Say what you want about him but there’s a big gap….. It hasn’t been the same since. And this isn’t about individual success. I’m talking about the scene as a whole, media, press, collaborations, the entire landscape. Look at the state of it now. Artists used to promote each other’s projects. They used to show up for each other. A win for one felt like a win for all. Now it’s every person for themselves… It’s bush. (No more UK rap tweets from me today 👋🏿)

Aitch’s team turned down a 7-figure offer from Sony Music Entertainment to go independent. At the time, they had a top 3 EP, three songs in the top 10, and real momentum. Sony wanted to lock them in long term; 10–15 years on a royalty deal, while they still carried a lot of the workload. On paper, it sounds like a win. In reality, the value exchange didn’t match. So they backed themselves. Left the deal, partnered with Virgin Music Group, and dropped “Rain” independently. Number 3 on the charts. 24 weeks charting. Platinum in Australia. Over a million sales. All owned. That’s the difference. If what you’re giving up doesn’t match what you’re getting, the number is just noise.
