@RealPaulPutner Yes, that's disappointing. I've been listening to Gyles' podcast and where I expected him to be pompous he often comes across as empathetic. Dermot genuinely engaged here, didn't go for some superficial fluff and wasn't looking for a pat on the back, but got shamed for it.

Today, I caught the first five mins of This Morning. I felt sorry for O'Leary. He was asked for a 'happy' song and he chose an alternative track. He let the viewers see the 'real him' only to get ridiculed by Brandreth. It was a Tim from The Office moment youtube.com/watch?v=ikHKm3…

@TyneSnapper @billy6715 The Alnwick Castle next door is Teac Fiddlers in the 2008 Street View so presumably the Irish clientele didn't have to move far!

@TyneSnapper @billy6715 Not one of North Shields' architectural upgrades sadly. I'm assuming it must have been in a poor state since they managed to repurpose a fair few buildings around that area.

#NorthShields General Havelock - Saville Street North Shields. Went on to be renamed O'Keefes (plastic Irish pub), demolished in 19090's and replaced with an Asda Local store.

@JHCPAL What a story! Our families have obviously trodden similar paths. I've mentioned before about how my grandparents also lived in Widdrington but my mum spent the first couple of years of her life in Longfram, where one set of her grandparents also lived.

The original 1841 lens at Coquet Island lighthouse, replaced in the 1960s, is being reinstated after having been refurbished in the meantime. What a great example of Trinity House having the foresight to keep it and the instinct to reuse it! northumberlandgazette.co.uk/news/politics/…

@THERussellGrant @hknormington I'm a big fan of their work too and was amused to read recently that Tony Hatch's dummy lyric for Don't Sleep... was "Don't S**t in the Custard".

Why isn’t Petula Clark a Dame? She’s in her 90s and when you see lesser talents walk off with a gong you wonder what’s wrong with the honour’s system … #honours #damepetulaclark

Luke Jerram's Gaia has previously visited Hexham Abbey and Durham Cathedral but it's back in the North East this weekend alongside his Museum of the Moon for the first time as part of #BlythCelebrates #FestivalOfEnergy

@fotofacade @createstreets This beauty is out the back of my sister-in-law's place. It's hard to tell from the photo, but you can still see the shape of the fireplace of the upper left-hand room. I think the rest of the terrace was demolished after wartime damage. Hers is part of a c.1950s row.

I do love a ghost gable like this found near Ancoats in Manchester - but it's rarer still to find the intangible signs of the puff of smoke from the chimney...

This would be a massive headache for churches, many of which don’t have a concept of ‘consecrated’ worship buildings. If redundant building can’t be sold on or converted, that’s a huge financial burden for the church that owns them
Zia Yusuf@ZiaYusufUK

Reform will protect British culture, because a nation without a culture is just an economic zone.  We will preserve Britain’s Christian heritage, granting listed status to all churches to prohibit their conversion into places of worship for any other faith.

@1LoveOneClub @TyneSnapper @neheritagelib Those living in the village are very proud of where they live, but have seen decline with older people remembering when it had more shops and pubs. It has recently been announced as a recipient of the govt Pride in Place funding, for locally-led regeneration though.

@1LoveOneClub @TyneSnapper @neheritagelib The village is part of the wider North Shields now, with the Meadow Well estate closing the gap between it, Chirton and North Shields, but it still has a strong sense of local identity. There's a thriving Facebook page for those who live there as well as ex pats.

Hello! As mentioned yday, Percy Main is one of North Tyneside's last true pit villages. The pit actually stood right next to where this church was constructed only a few years after the pit closed, meaning the same people who hewed the coal actually worshipped in this church.

We start a new series this week from Percy Main - one of North Tyneside's last true pit villages. This place sprung out the ground thanks to the stuff that lie beneath it - coal. The pit was relatively short lived, sunk in 1799 and lasting til the 1870s, tho its legacy remains.

@TyneSnapper @neheritagelib Not often I spot any inaccuracies with your posts to be honest! I worked with the St John's team for a few years, though, so got to know the place pretty well. Lee Cleminson is the vicar there, a native of the West End, and justifiably well loved in the village.

@admgry @neheritagelib You are dead right, got my Percy Main mixed up with Willington Quay, thanks for the heads up. I've removed the original image to avoid any confusion.

@1LoveOneClub @TyneSnapper @neheritagelib There's a church hall built to the rear, modified in the 80s, and the main sanctuary was reordered around the turn of the millennium to create an office and meeting rooms at the rear, as well as a lady chapel. The pews were removed at that time too.

The drawing room at Jesmond Towers, Newcastle in May 1886. Jesmond Towers is a Gothic-style mansion house located to the north of Bemersyde Drive, off Jesmond Dene Road. It was built in the early 19th century with additions in 1817 and 1823-27 by John Dobson for Sir Thomas Burdon. It was further enlarged in 1869 by T. Oliver and in 1884 by T.R. Spence for the Tyneside shipbuilding magnate Charles Mitchell.
