Chicago’s gunshot detection system, ShotSpotter, is scheduled to shut down on Sunday, Sept. 22. Sound irresponsible? It is. Brandon Johnson and his allies in the Chicago Teachers Union have been fighting to kill the ShotSpotter program for months. But you can take action to save ShotSpotter before it’s too late. City Council is scheduled to vote this Wednesday on an ordinance allowing Police Superintendent Larry Snelling to keep the ShotSpotter technology online, regardless of what Johnson says. You can contact your alderman directly and tell them to vote YES on ShotSpotter using the link below. As always, please be respectful when contacting your City Council member. Many aldermen want to keep the technology, and don’t agree with Johnson’s radical stance. In fact, recent polling shows support for keeping ShotSpotter is highest among Black (78% in favor) and Latino (73%) voters who live in communities where gun violence is highest. Just a few thoughtful notes from constituents can be enough to make a real difference for public safety in Chicago. A recent study from the University of Chicago found that ShotSpotter saves an estimated 85 lives per year due to faster police response times. That means your outreach could literally save lives. Just a few thoughtful notes from constituents can be enough to make a real difference for public safety in Chicago. ⬇️
