A24’s #UNDERTONE is remarkably unsettling. I actually think this might be the first movie that’s kept me up at night since Paranormal Activity. Good thing director Ian Tuason is moving on to that franchise next! This is an excellent feature directorial debut for him. It’s a concept/style that demands spot-on execution or it just plain old doesn’t work. Tuason knew precisely how to make the absolute most of a single location, found footage (or in this case, found audio) style narrative. The simplicity of the visuals paired with a phenomenally constructed soundscape is overwhelmingly effective. A rare horror movie where covering your eyes or looking away won’t help much. Yet another wildly impressive aspect of this production is Nina Kiri’s work as Evy. She’s nearly the only actor on screen this entire movie. Not only is her performance instrumental to the success of the scares, but it’s also essential to giving the movie depth. The focus of Undertone is the sinister audio recordings, but they become wholly intertwined with Evy’s personal struggles. Kiri soars commanding the screen in an intimate/claustrophobic narrative and while conveying the significance of her character’s history and current challenges. An impressive feat in a brisk 90-minute film. Undertone isn’t just a scary movie that sticks with you. The evil feels inescapable during the film, and then it follows you home, almost to the point that you can feel the physical weight of it. This one’s going to rock a lot of moviegoers to their cores, and I can’t wait to see it happen when it hits theaters on March 13.
