A photo to celebrate today, and to underscore the need to expand beyond protected wetlands, especially in countries like ours.

I’m absolutely thrilled to reveal the largest ichthyosaur skeleton EVER discovered in Britain! It was an honour to lead the excavation and unearth this incredible Jurassic GIANT from its ancient rocky tomb in Rutland! Found by Joe Davis @RutlandWaterNR #RutlandSeaDragon

@Mshorten @BirdWatchIE That is amazing. I’ve been looking through some of his stuff online, really like how readable it is…it must have been so exciting to be a birder/ornithologist in that time… Good luck with the book!

@aerpower @BirdWatchIE In doing research for the forthcoming ‘Birds of County Cork’ I went through Ussher’s papers in the Royal Irish Academy - amazing amount of stuff in there including Golden Eagle feathers

I came across a cool paper from 1911 about the discovery of Fulmar breeding in Ireland. The ornithologist Richard Ussher was alerted to breeding Fulmar in Mayo by a boatman who referred to them as “white Cawnoges”. Cawnoge being the Irish word for Manx Shearwater. Love this!

Back in Carlow for a few days and have already seen Crossbill, Woodpecker, Goosander Brambling as well as this Peacock butterfly enjoying some winter sun the day after Christmas. Splendid having this on your doorstep 😊

It was such a privilege to see these amazing sharks doing their thing off the coast of Clare this week! I’ll never forget it!! I also deployed a few more tags for my PhD (see if you can spot it)! A massive thanks to @IWDGnews for having me 📸 Simon Berrow/IWDG/@BaskingIrish

Comma butterfly in Leixlip Named after the white mark on the underside of wing that looks like a comma 🤨 I used to get the 'Wild Ireland' magazine as a kid & remember reading they had been spotted in Wexford, blew my mind then, great they have established & spread in Ireland!

Found the pothole marked on this wonderful map, I’ve had this (and other Burren maps) since I was a kid and absolutely adore them. Great for finding caves, ring-forts holy wells that you would never know were there!

We came across this magical, hidden pothole in the Burren called Poll an Phúca which means hole of the púca, a supernatural creature in Irish folklore. From the entrance you can hear an invisible river flowing deep underground.I imagine this sound to be the wailing of the púca!
