I think it’s inappropriate and false to conflate the mere presence of a Palestinian flag pin on someone with antisemitism. I especially think it’s offensive to effectively dox this person online and share their Instagram page in a manner that’ll direct lots of harassment and hate toward them by trolls. Still, I would ask those who support the flight attendant’s right to wear this pin the following: would you be equally supportive or at least not mind it if he were wearing an Israeli flag pin? Or would that enrage you and make you feel uncomfortable? In other words, the Palestinian flag is not a symbol of antisemitism, but would there be rage if the tables were turned? Can Jewish flight attendants who wish to wear Israeli pins do so without controversy? I hope the answer is yes. In a recent flight on Emirates Airlines, I asked a pursuer (senior attendant in charge) why staff no longer have flags that show their nationality next to their names, as was the case for years with Emirates, which has some of the most diverse range of nationalities working onboard their fleet. He said that due to disputes over the flags of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and how attendants from each of these nations faced governmental and local backlash for displaying their respective flags, the airline decided to stop having any flag pins to minimize controversy and clashes. I don’t know what Delta’s policies are regarding the expression of one’s identity or political opinions while working. It is reasonable to expect businesses to have protocols and procedures to avoid antagonizing some of their customers and creating public controversy when all they’re trying to do is make money and please as many of their passengers as possible. Nevertheless, in the grand scheme of things, there are genuinely shameful instances of rising antisemitism that must be called out, confronted, and addressed. This isn't one.
