This viral map actually overestimates the presence of Arabic in East & Southeast Arabia. Arabic was definitely not widely spoken in Dhofar (western Oman) before Islam. Dhofar actually didn’t become majority Arabic-speaking until the 20th Century under Sultan Qaboos who introduced universal education in Oman (ask me for sources if you want). The coast of East Arabia, an important hub of Nestorian Christianity, was probably majority Aramaic-speaking but historical records also mention a local native language called ‘Qatrayit’ (Aramaic for ‘Qatari’). The history of the Middle East is really much different from what people think. Unfortunately, at least in online spaces, discussions about Arab history are completely dominated by Zionists & Moroccan/Algerian Berberists both of whom have a clear political agenda.
