That is why you should never wish (not that the Sudanese people did) for national armies to dissolve, disband or become weak in our parts of the world. Militias will replace them and make life worse. It’s the ultimate cruel irony of our times: the armies stopping us from our obligations towards our persecuted brethren are also stopping the demons amongst us from feasting on us openly.

He breathed his last today.
He called everyone to his room, said his goodbyes, recited the Shahadah, and within moments his soul departed.
The swiftness of it all left everyone in silent disbelief.
He often used to recite this poem (poet unknown) that stuck with me:

My father-in-law is 75 years old. He has advanced Alzheimer’s, and in the span of just six months his condition spiraled from being about “70% present” to a state of complete senility—no recognition of anyone, no conversation, just sitting in front of a wall, staring blankly. This decline is especially painful because he once had a brilliant mind and an extraordinary memory. He was deeply devoted to poetry, and whenever I wanted lines from Hafiz, Saʿdi, or Attar, I would simply call him. On the spot, he would recite verses upon verses, perfectly fitting the subject. The last three months have been particularly hard as his health deteriorated. The family began bracing for the inevitable. But then, just a week ago, something unexpected happened. He walked out of his room, recognized some of his grandchildren, asked for his favorite dessert, and spent the day quoting Saʿdī endlessly. His daughters and wife wept with emotion and glorified God. The next day, however, he slipped back into his silent, unresponsive state. Now, his lungs are collapsing, his breathing is labored, and is practically vegetative. It’s heartbreaking. So yeah there is this spark of green before the final sunset. What makes it even more tragic is that he had “cheated” death so many times in the past, only to be undone by this silent, creeping condition. He served in the Afghan army through the monarchy, the republic, and the communist years, though he remained apolitical. In the early 1980s, he was in charge of the Afghan-Pakistan border. In 1985, his helicopter was shot down over mountainous terrain. Ten men were on board. He alone survived. With a broken leg and fractured spine, he crawled through the wilderness for two days until he stumbled upon a man with a donkey, who carried him to the nearest civilization. For a man who endured so much to be taken by the slow erasure of memory and mind is a cruel irony.
