“The Colombo District has become vulnerable to this extent due to the constructions carried out without any proper planning or understanding of regulations, along with personal and politically motivated decisions that have placed both the district and its people at risk,” Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said, revealing that there will be no permission granted for unauthorized constructions within the Colombo District carried out under the guise of a development agenda.

🇱🇰 3 Months, No Policy — E-Commerce Still in Limbo ⭕ It has been over 3 months since the government supposedly began working on a new framework for taxing and releasing e-commerce goods. ⭕ As usual with the Department of Trade and Investment policies & Dept of Customs, nothing has materialized. ⭕ Meanwhile, 🇨🇳 AliExpress continues to impose arbitrary taxes on goods electronic parts, circuit components, and educational items that cannot be sourced elsewhere. ⭕ The worst part is that there is no cross-check mechanism between what customers pay as “taxes” and what intermediaries declare to customs — meaning much of the changed fees as "taxes" never reaches government coffers. #SriLanka #Ecommerce

Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is set to implement a new tariff mechanism for e-commerce (AliExpress, Temu) trade—question: how long will it take? ⭕ President has instructed the Finance Ministry to implement a tariff framework to speed up clearance and facilitate B2C e-commerce trade. ⭕ The Ministry is reportedly weighing an intermediate system between the older informal per-kg methodology and the current HS-based system—possibly a de minimis threshold plus a flat rate. ⭕ The Trade and Investment Policies (TIP) department of the Finance Ministry has been tasked with implementing this new mechanism. ⭕ Historically, TIP has been one of Sri Lanka’s most lethargic departments: hundreds of policy proposals from industry and other government ministries and departments sit unreviewed, and it has never found the right balance between facilitation and tariff barriers. ⭕ Decades-old concessionary rates on certain HS codes, as well as exorbitant rates on others, have rarely been reviewed or adjusted based on whether the intended outcomes have been achieved. ⭕ For example, shoes carry a Rs 2,000 cess duty on every imported pair—a rate unchanged for decades—yet we have not seen measurable growth in the local industry; instead, smugglers profit. ⭕ Industries such as electric appliances are lobbying for separate HS codes for items requiring SLSI approval versus those that do not, to avoid unnecessary clearances and approval delays caused by grouping all products under the same code. - not happened yet. ⭕ The solar industry wants to lower the lithium-ion battery tax to foster growth in the battery-backed solar space. - not happened yet. ⭕ Even government ministries find it extremely difficult to get things done by TIP. For example, the Industries Minister wants to increase the tax on cheap lighter imports to protect the failing matchbox industry, but that change has not yet occurred. ⭕ The saddest part is that TIP could be a great tool for the country—like the Central Bank—for driving significant economic progress by analyzing data and setting rates while bypassing bureaucracy, yet the department has rarely acted. ⭕ The administration wants a viable tariff mechanism for E commerce within days to weeks; however, if TIP follows its old pattern, it may take not months or years, but decades before a new e-commerce tariff framework materializes. This would be a good KPI for the TIP (Department of Trade and Investment Policies) under this government. Let’s see how long it will take to implement a new mechanism... #SriLanka #Ecommerce

🚨🇮🇱 I CAN‘T STAND THIS PROPAGANDA ANYMORE. Yes, I’m glad that Israeli hostages have been freed. And just as glad that Palestinian prisoners have been released. But a few things need to be made clear: FIRST: It’s absurd that Israelis are called “hostages” while Palestinians are labeled “prisoners.” That’s propaganda. It’s the same thing: human beings who’ve had their freedom taken away, on both sides. SECOND: The released Israeli hostages appear well-fed, smiling, not a single kilo lost. Clearly treated well under the circumstances. In contrast, the Palestinian prisoners look like they’ve just walked out of a death camp: emaciated, scarred, aged by years of abuse. Tortured. And no one talks about it. THIRD: Everywhere I read: “Hamas killed all the women, only men were released.” That’s simply a lie. A malicious one. The women who were still alive had already been released in earlier exchange deals. But facts don’t matter when it’s time to push the next hate-driven narrative for $7000. FOURTH: Everyone talks about a handful of Israeli hostages, but no one mentions the tens of thousands of Palestinian hostages abducted by Israel. Many of them children. Imprisoned without charges, without trial. FIFTH: And no one talks about the tens of thousands of civilians killed in Israel’s genocide. SIXTH: While the ‘ceasefire’ (it’s just a matter of time until Israel breaks it again) is being celebrated, radical Israeli settlers are still violently stealing land in the West Bank; with full impunity. They break international law daily, and no one seems to care. SEVENTH: Politicians across the world are shamelessly cucking for Israel, offering blind support while refusing to even mention the crimes committed in Gaza, the ongoing apartheid in the West Bank, or the endless aggression toward neighboring countries. EIGHTH: The same governments and media that claim to stand for human rights, international law, and “never again” are now either silent or fully complicit: funding, arming, and excusing an apartheid regime in real time. When Palestinian lives are dehumanized, erased, and bombed into dust, suddenly all those values vanish So no, I will not take part in this propaganda. I will not whitewash Israel’s crimes. And yes, I still stand by my words: A STATE LIKE ISRAEL SHOULD NOT EXIST.

I am currently in Doha, Qatar and have witnessed first hand the illegal criminal acts of Israel, a state which has no respect for life or law and order. If this is what they can do with impunity in a sovereign state like Qatar, then imagine the decades long cruelty and oppression they have been inflicting against defenceless Palestinian civilians and children. Are these the actions of a state that wants peace? When will the world wake up? FREE PALESTINE

This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. First, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Allah knows I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of the Jabalia refugee camp. My hope was that Allah would extend my life so I could return with my family and loved ones to our original town of occupied Asqalan (Al-Majdal). But Allah’s will came first, and His decree is final. I have lived through pain in all its details, tasted suffering and loss many times, yet I never once hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification—so that Allah may bear witness against those who stayed silent, those who accepted our killing, those who choked our breath, and whose hearts were unmoved by the scattered remains of our children and women, doing nothing to stop the massacre that our people have faced for more than a year and a half. I entrust you with Palestine—the jewel in the crown of the Muslim world, the heartbeat of every free person in this world. I entrust you with its people, with its wronged and innocent children who never had the time to dream or live in safety and peace. Their pure bodies were crushed under thousands of tons of Israeli bombs and missiles, torn apart and scattered across the walls. I urge you not to let chains silence you, nor borders restrain you. Be bridges toward the liberation of the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen homeland. I entrust you to take care of my family. I entrust you with my beloved daughter Sham, the light of my eyes, whom I never got the chance to watch grow up as I had dreamed. I entrust you with my dear son Salah, whom I had wished to support and accompany through life until he grew strong enough to carry my burden and continue the mission. I entrust you with my beloved mother, whose blessed prayers brought me to where I am, whose supplications were my fortress and whose light guided my path. I pray that Allah grants her strength and rewards her on my behalf with the best of rewards. I also entrust you with my lifelong companion, my beloved wife, Umm Salah (Bayan), from whom the war separated me for many long days and months. Yet she remained faithful to our bond, steadfast as the trunk of an olive tree that does not bend—patient, trusting in Allah, and carrying the responsibility in my absence with all her strength and faith. I urge you to stand by them, to be their support after Allah Almighty. If I die, I die steadfast upon my principles. I testify before Allah that I am content with His decree, certain of meeting Him, and assured that what is with Allah is better and everlasting. O Allah, accept me among the martyrs, forgive my past and future sins, and make my blood a light that illuminates the path of freedom for my people and my family. Forgive me if I have fallen short, and pray for me with mercy, for I kept my promise and never changed or betrayed it. Do not forget Gaza… And do not forget me in your sincere prayers for forgiveness and acceptance. Anas Jamal Al-Sharif 06.04.2025 This is what our beloved Anas requested to be published upon his martyrdom.

The Gaza Strip is the most complicated humanitarian challenge in the world. The only warzone where aid is expected to be delivered into active combat zones, which civilians are not allowed to flee. This would have looked completely different if Egypt had opened its border.

MMDA Reforms Justice must prevail – even within our own community. My recent remarks on the need for urgent reforms to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) have sparked debate. Let me be clear: I have deep respect for the Ulema. However, reverence cannot be a shield for injustice. The law, as it stands, does not serve all, especially not our women. And that must change. For decades, since 1971 we’ve seen committee after committee, Justice Jameel, Dr. Shahabdeen, Justice Marsoof, Haleemdeen, yet the reforms our community needs have remained elusive. How long must we wait? Sooner or later, our people will lose faith in the system entirely. What is even more troubling is that some of the strongest opposition to reform comes from those living in Western democracies, enjoying equal rights under secular legal systems, while denying those same rights to their own community back home. That is not just inconsistency; it is hypocrisy. Let’s also confront the uncomfortable truth: if 6 out of 60 Quazis have been caught red-handed accepting bribes—that’s 10%. It’s not just a few bad apples. It is a system under strain, and in desperate need of reform. Using the name of Muslim law to cover up injustice is a betrayal of the very values Islam stands for compassion, accountability, and fairness. Unless these reforms are incorporated, we will continue to project a false image of Islamic values and laws, doing a grave disservice to the religion we claim to uphold and the values we pledge to protect. It is high time we implement the minimum, essential reforms: 1. A minimum age of marriage at 18 2. A woman’s right to sign her own marriage certificate 3. Provision for permanent alimony 4. Abolishing kaikuli (dowry) 5. Granting maintenance jurisdiction to Magistrate’s Courts 6. Setting minimum qualifications for Quazis 7. Allowing women to serve as Quazis 8. Referring contested divorces to the District Court for fair, evidence-based adjudication The draft Bill is finalized. The Attorney General has certified it. We have no excuse left. No law is worth the paper it’s written on if it fails to deliver justice, justice without fear, favour, or prejudice, especially to the oppressed and vulnerable. This is not about religion versus reform. It is about honouring our faith through a legal system that reflects its highest ideals. The time to act is now. 🚨 Scam Alert: The railway ticketing system was briefly restored under the new government but is back to its old ways. Tickets are “sold out” the moment they go live, then immediately reappear on the black market. If you’re in tourism, you already know the drill. We’re forced to pay black market prices just to honour confirmed services to our guests. We’re being extorted, while the crooks operates openly with clear collusion from inside the Railway Department. It’s public infrastructure being hijacked for private profit. And it doesn’t stop here. I’ve signaled this before, and I’ll say it again: the old operators are crawling back across every sector and many are well and truly back in business. Meanwhile, it’s easy to wax poetic about crime and justice because a handful of arrests keep the sycophants buzzing. Those token wins become a shiny shield, distracting from the rot festering underneath. If this government isn’t serious about institutional reform and about dismantling the networks embedded deep inside the state... then this mandate too will be eaten from the inside out. The people didn’t vote for cosmetic change... They voted for Systemic change. #SriLanka #SystemChangeLK #AccountabilityProjectLK

As Chair of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF), I’m committed to building a fair and transparent economy for Sri Lanka. Recent claims accusing me of curtailing e-commerce are baseless and misleading. Let’s set the record straight and address the real issue. On June 3, 2025, our COPF inquiry exposed Customs’ informal weight-based tax system for e-commerce, which lacked legal backing for years. The government’s inaction allowed platforms like Temu to flood our market with untaxed bulk imports, undercutting local SMEs and taking undue advantage of the loopholes in the law. Then when this practice had come to light in April during meetings with stakeholders Customs had scrambled to revert to HS code-based taxation, but without a proper framework, consumers are now facing absurd costs—a 500LKR item can incur 37,000LKR in charges! This inefficiency hurts shoppers, businesses, and our economy. I’m advocating for a dedicated and simplified HS codes for B2C e-commerce and vendor-collected taxes, like VAT systems in the EU and Vietnam, to ensure fair pricing, protect local SMEs, and boost transparent revenue collection. E-commerce should empower consumers and entrepreneurs, not penalize them. I’m fighting for a system that supports YOUR aspirations—affordable online shopping, thriving local businesses, and a stronger #Srilanka. Watch my detailed discussion here: bit.ly/3ToW7pv Share your thoughts below on how we can shape a fairer economic future! #FairTradeSL #Ecommerce #SriLankaEconomy

Below is an English translation of a post that I have copied from a Facebook profile. Hope Chemmani Mass graves will create enough pressure to have an accountability mechanism for atrocities committed. “The doll that stayed awake, watching, knows everything that happened there. A little girl has been buried in the red soil, along with a blue book bag, glass bangles, sandals, and children’s toys. This doll is going to become a time capsule. I too had a similar-looking doll. It was made of thick rubber, and the colors on it were not just painted on the surface but thoroughly infused during molding—cast in a single mold. One of the quality dolls of those days. It was first used by my elder sister during her childhood, and later I played with it. That doll appears in a photograph from my sister’s second birthday (1985). Similar dolls can also be seen in Tamil movies from the mid-1980s. This doll must have been bought at a temple festival stall or a toy shop before the family relocated. It’s likely that this doll was used by the little girl’s sibling and kept safely for her. I believe that, just like me, this child carried the doll with her during their displacement. If that sibling is still alive, this child can be identified—and through that, the timeline of this burial site will be revealed. My inner voice says that a well-lived family has been reduced to dust. It feels as though nature has held onto these items, waiting for the right moment to settle its account. HOPE 🤞” facebook.com/share/p/16qXwj…
