NEWS: Ilya Sutskever once called Elon Musk “the strongest founder, CEO in the world,” Monday testimony reveals
Under cross-examination from Musk’s attorney Nate Collarton, Ilya Sutskever was shown an email he had written about Elon Musk before founding OpenAI.
“I felt that Elon was by far the most competent, the strongest founder, CEO in the world,” Sutskever told the court, confirming the email.
Sutskever also testified that Elon Musk made him better at his job and that he grew to appreciate the “vast depth” of Musk’s strategic insight.
Asked about his recruitment to OpenAI, Sutskever revealed he turned down a $6 million per year offer from Google to join Musk and build OpenAI.
Sutskever testified Musk’s main motivation for starting OpenAI was to counter Google, which at the time led the race to develop AGI.

Asked if the stake is worth more today, Sutskever said yes. When pressed if it could be as much as $7 billion, he agreed. Sutskever also confirmed that OpenAI is paying his legal fees in the Musk v. OpenAI trial. He described it as standard practice for departing executives. The disclosure raises questions about whose interests Sutskever’s testimony is serving as he takes the stand in defense of the company he helped found.
