In November 2023, Lauren was a new mom to a 7‑month‑old baby girl and newly pregnant with her second child. Life was unfolding exactly as she hoped. Then a routine prenatal blood test changed everything — she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Within days, her family was confronted with a painful reality: Lauren needed to begin treatment immediately to have a chance at survival. What followed was a journey marked by courage, heartbreak and resilience. Lauren endured high‑dose chemotherapy, a relapse, and ultimately a stem cell transplant. She spent more than 100 days in hospitals, separated from her family, relying on hundreds of blood and platelet transfusions to stay alive. Lauren is now 228 days post‑transplant and in remission. She’s home. She’s watching her daughter twirl in dance class. She’s celebrating holidays. She’s growing old with her husband. And she’s alive because blood donors showed up. “Every single donation you make goes directly towards saving someone's life, an act of kindness and selflessness that cannot be understated,” Lauren said. “Your generosity ensures that people like me — battling illnesses and facing unimaginable challenges — have a fighting chance. You are the unseen heroes behind countless recovered lives and cherished moments. Thank you for giving me and so many others the gift of life.” Patients with cancer often need blood and platelets throughout treatment, and during this national blood shortage, there is a severe need for donors to make an appointment to give. Make an appointment to donate today: rdcrss.org/4aeTWwE

As a mom of three, youth sports coach and Red Crosser Jacqueline Godfrey Bassermann understands the weight and importance of lifesaving training. Jacqueline joined our Government Relations team nearly 15 years ago and now serves as a director in the department. The Red Cross mission spoke to her as a meaningful way to serve her country while supporting community resilience — something she also sees firsthand as a coach. A moment that reminded her and her kids about the power of community and lifesaving skills occurred in 2023, when a Buffalo Bills player went into cardiac arrest on the field. “I remember watching that game with my family when he collapsed,” Jacqueline said. “My kids were scared in that moment. We explained to them that he was going to be okay because he was getting help from people who were trained.” Jacqueline emphasizes that you don’t need to be a medical professional to save a life. “It doesn’t matter if you’re working in an office, a school, or if you’re just a bystander,” she said. “Everyone in that stadium, if they had the training, could have been there to help.” While Jacqueline has not had to use CPR on the field, her training has prepared her to assess every situation and be ready to act if an emergency were to happen. Not only does she create a safe environment for her young athletes, but they do, too. Jacqueline is dedicated to keeping her CPR training up to date and advocates for meaningful change. Alongside the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, she attended the signing of Desha’s Law. The New York legislation requires schools to have trained staff, clear emergency plans, and accessible, working AEDs in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. The law honors a young girl who passed away after collapsing during a basketball game. “Standing with and looking out at her family there was such an emotional but powerful moment of what her memory would do for kids, whether it’s in New York State, or across the country,” Jacqueline said. We're grateful for Jacqueline's commitment to protecting her community and beyond. Her story shows us that anyone can make a difference and learn to save a life.

Deepfake abuse is abuse. Sexualised images, videos, or audio of children generated or manipulated using AI tools are child sexual abuse material. Even without an identifiable victim, it normalises the sexual exploitation of children. UNICEF calls for urgent action to prevent and protect children from this escalating threat. unicef.link/4qYJfWp

Good news on the power of immunization & partnerships. Resuming preventive cholera vaccination will protect children & help stop the deadly disease in its tracks. But it must include other efforts such as access to safe water & basic sanitation.👇 unicef.org/press-releases…

When Paisley and Adeline entered the world in October 2024, their family was expecting the joyful chaos of newborn twins. Instead, their lives changed in an instant. Paisley was born with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a serious brain injury caused by limited oxygen and blood flow to the brain. At just 2 weeks old, tiny Paisley faced challenges no newborn should endure. Back-to-back blood and platelet transfusions gave her a second chance at life. “When Paisley and Adeline were born, we never imagined how quickly our world would change,” said their mother, Isabelle. “Paisley faced incredible challenges in her first days, and it was the generosity of blood donors that gave her the strength to keep fighting. Because of them, she got a second chance, and we got to bring both of our girls home. We will always be grateful for the gift they gave our family.” Paisley is now thriving, and she's a vibrant reminder of what blood donors make possible. To honor her journey, the Galvan family hosted a @RedCrossWis blood drive last August and will host another this March, inviting their community to give blood and platelets in Paisley’s honor. “We want to share this story not just to raise awareness for HIE but to say thank you to the blood donors who made her recovery possible,” Isabelle said. A sufficient blood supply is critical for patients like Paisley. During this severe blood shortage, blood donations are needed to ensure lifesaving care. You’re the missing piece to ensuring our blood supply recovers from a severe national blood shortage. Distributions of blood products to hospitals are still outpacing the number of blood donations coming in, and patients across the country receiving critical medical care need you. Come to donate blood or platelets through Feb. 28, and we’ll share our heartfelt thanks with a $20 e-gift card to a merchant of your choice. Make an appointment to give: rdcrss.org/4rp2EPR
