Source: Detroit native Basheer Jihad has agreed to join the Pistons for NBA Summer League. Jihad is coming off a strong rookie season with the College Park and now returns home after posting 33 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks against Detroit’s G League affiliate this season.

Legitimately honest question: why do we even have a transfer portal in college basketball (and even football)? If everyone's best move is essentially to enter the portal and test free agency, whether it's to leave or just get more money from the current program, why even make anyone fill out paperwork to be in the portal? It's open poaching season in terms of recruiting and tampering anyways. With how little structure there is around NIL, it just seems redundant to see every single announcement on social about Player X entering the portal when, yea, it's probably in their best interest to exercise their rights (?) as a free agent...

@WinterSportsLaw Indeed. Was sent one today to look at. Your reps either have or create leverage to negotiate it out or down.

For those who continue to say “college athletes need contracts and those contracts need buyouts.” College athletes already do have contracts with their schools. Those contracts can be (and sometimes are) for multiple years. Those contracts can (and often do) include buyouts.
