My new piece in @commentmag (paywalled for now, so please subscribe!). On friendship, its vulnerabilities, and why we need to recover an older way of thinking about this most intimate of relationships. comment.org/venturing-our-…

This one is worth reading. As someone who's experienced Great Texts on all sides of the ideological spectrum, this reminder and exhortation is spot on.

For @the_point_mag I wrote one if the most personally important essays I’ve ever written. My experience teaching great books has been utterly transformative, and I think that if you’re on the left you should be all in on it. thepointmag.com/examined-life/…

"A core Augustinian insight is that there is no love without attention, and that what we attend to discloses our loves. The poor, Christ told us, will always be with us. What matters is that Christians see them as Christ sees them" commonwealmagazine.org/trump-poor-leo…

@DZRishmawy Does the NYT piece or the MLK scholar quoted in it (Lerone Martin) say that the biblical context is not important to understand MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail?

It is okay for American students to not be illiterate with respect to one of the basic texts that underlies much of the religious, political, philosophical, ethical, and literary inheritance of not only Western but global history.
Leah Libresco Sargeant@LeahLibresco

There’s nothing unreasonable about sending students to read the book of Daniel to understand MLK’s allusion to Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in his Letter from Birmingham Jail. nytimes.com/2025/10/14/us/…

@OsitaNwanevu You really must follow the shot of MacIntyre with the chaser of Jeff Stout's *Democracy and Tradition*, a deeply prescient book that projects the anti-liberal trajectory of MacIntyre straight through to the post-liberals of 2025... in 2004.

@OsitaNwanevu The left's abandonment of the idea of "canon," "great texts," or tradition for that matter, leaves the lane clear for extremists on the right to claim those concepts for themselves. Why not rather fight for a more inclusive and representative canon?

@DZRishmawy I assume my Protestant bona fides are pretty well established, but I don't think this representation of Catholic theology quite passes the steelman test, Derek. Certainly doesn't reflect what I've learned studying with Catholic teachers at Notre Dame and elsewhere.

@John_Barach @thecoffeemonkey @kateshellnutt (a) presumes that the church considers the location and decorations a regrettable concession, which seems highly unlikely considering the specific congregants that are in attendance. It's reasonable to conclude that this is a feature not a bug.

@thecoffeemonkey @agnologist @kateshellnutt But my main points in this thread were that (a) those aren't their decorations and they shouldn't be blamed for them as the OP seemed to do and (b) it would be better to choose a venue that doesn't have political/ideological connotations.

@stephenkamm @jennfrey I'm increasingly convinced that what MacIntyre describes as the "manipulative mode" is the signature temptation in higher ed communities. When effectiveness masquerades as a value-neutral justification, apart from any consideration of what education is *for*, we've lost our way.

My elder-millennial emo spiritually-saturated top 10 list, courtesy of the @nytimes. Although I feel uncultured at the total lack of overlap with my favorite film critic, @alissamarie.
