Teaching a new course on concurrent programming this Spring. As usual, this new course will also be an experiment to discover what works. Excited to teach this using parts of the OCaml language I helped build. Aim to do OxCaml for safe parallelism toward the end.

Redesigning my hobby OCaml + Dream + htmx project and updating to use the new type-safe routing in dream-html. Biggest change is probably stripping out Tailwind and replacing with Bulma. Pretty happy with the result. Almost there...

i keep seeing simplicity slop everyone knows simplicity is an important goal but it is the hardest thing to do right what most people do is just slap together things, end result is hacky and brittle, but they can pat themselves on the back for it being simple

@jetbrains This podcast is lovely. The part about the lowest grade being the grade for every student was a very brilliant approach to carry everyone along.

` tech debt ´ is the best-described concept in software engineering You’re literally creating debt with every keystroke. Sometimes it accelerates delivery, sometimes it mortgages your future.

I'm a big fan of React. Nearly a decade of frontend dominance. Amazing patterns, backward compatibility, and measured development pace. Nobody gets fired for picking React; it feels mature, yet it still feels experimental. I love that.

mmht.clinic (@SureshSivakami) runs a psychiatry clinic every few weeks at the Tribal Health Initiative. Sittilingi is a shining example of the impact a small group of determined individuals can have even in the remotest areas of a historically underserved district.

The revival of Sittilingi Valley in the Harur taluk of Dharmapuri dt began 32yrs ago when Dr. Regi & Lalitha from Kerala started the iconic Sittlingi tribal hospital, then came Thulir school, large organic farming association, Porkkai Artisan Centre, food processing unit.etc 1/3

@yminsky It might be crazy but I feel like we should invert the classroom, first have students learn the material on their own time, and then use the in-person time to do problems with no AI. In-person lectures are pointless when you have YouTube

Talking to my college age kids and their friends, LLMs seem like a pretty active pedagogical problem. Specifically, they report that using LLMs for problem sets and the like directly impedes their learning.

@yminsky This intuitively makes sense. Though, in contrast, I have seen (not university) people make the LLM be “Socratic” and have the solution but not allow you to just “get” the answer but have to think through it. For that I can say LLMs can be good to train with 👌

@yawaramin Priceless. I just realised ocaml saves a lot of key travel by not being bracket heavy.
