A lot of opinions on this. My preferences when it comes to what specific stats are important. For context, I'm speaking from a catchers perspective on game calling and my own game strategy. I used these numbers to define a players approach along with their bat path which is another discussion. Contact rate % -I hated guys that made a bunch of contact. They made your pitcher grind more. This drives up pitch count, fatigues your pitcher, and which tends to get into your bullpen faster. Out of Zone chase % - What guys can I expand the zone on? Batting average -This never lied. You make a mistake over the plate and they most likely get you. They could even get you on well located pitches. -Bad BA told me I didn't have to be as fine and we had some wiggle room/room for error. I would use try to use my lineup management strategy around having these guys at the plate in leveraged situations. IE: putting guys on, pitching around the good hitters to get to the bad ones. OBP -Another metric that told me if a guy chased or not. -On the other hand, if it was high, it told me what guys I could "ball to strike." Meaning, throw a pitch that starts as a ball and ends up a strike, (Front door cutters, back door curveballs LHP to LHH) etc. These guys had such good vision and approach that they would see "ball/strike out of pitcher's hand." So I used that against them. Meaning, I couldn't go with the traditional "expand the zone with 2K's." They most likely would not chase. Example: Votto, Miggy Cabrera. These are brief examples. Much more that goes into it. SLG never mattered to me since it's a stat that is dependent on a pitcher making a mistake. I expected damage on any hung OS pitch or meat ball heater anyway. In summary, high BA/High OBP/High Contact % guys were a nightmare for me to get out. They didn't chase, didn't miss mistake pitches, and didn't strike out. They even hit good, located pitches. To get these guys out, you had to pitch Up/In, Ball to strike, and attack (get ahead in count quick). Also, mixing sequences so you aren't predictable/repetitive. I'm interested to hear everyones thoughts.

Jon, former players and experienced baseball people agree with you. Get on base, get hits, drive runners in. It's not rocket science.

What do you guys think of this? Let’s have a discussion. My opinion, the HR is the best result a hitter can have at the plate. However, that does not mean we try and hit HR’s every at bat. The best result of a HR is to obviously have multiple runners on. Solo home runs generally don’t win games, with the exception of a walk off, or a low scoring game. Get runners on, hit the ball hard, and have good at bats. It comes down to the intent of the hitter. Have good at bats(swing at strikes), hit the ball hard, and see what happens. My experience tells me that trying to hit home runs will result in a negative result more often than a positive one.
