Of course this is not surprising at all coming from somebody who dubbed a third of Lebanon where her “own community” has lived for centuries “Hezbollahland.” I’ve not even heard western journalists call it that.

If you think the incredibly vocal southern Lebanese are "terrified from everyone" & "are not going to tell you what they really feel" then perhaps your decades of research from Washington were embarrassingly hollow & you no longer know "your own community" well at all, Hanin.
Hanin Ghaddar@haningdr

‼️This is what irresponsible and lazy journalism looks like: - I’ve been covering and writing about Hezbollah and the Shia community for decades. - My research (articles, studies, book) have been based on extensive interviews with Lebanese Shia, including Hezbollah supporters. - I’m also from south Lebanon - actually grew up there until I went to college. I know the south. I know the Shia. - This is NOT how you talk to the Shia! - This report is a good example of lazy journalism and the reporters obviously have no idea how to talk to people from this community. - Two foreign journalists travel around the south for 10 days - only 10 days - and expect to understand the most complicated community dynamics there is - without any deep examination of the history, background, or the private spaces of this community. - The people in the south - terrified from everyone - are not going to tell you what they really feel. They don’t know you; they don’t trust you! - Journalism is a responsibility and these fast-food pieces could be extremely dangerous in shaping the political narrative and lumping the Shia, again, under Hezbollah’s umbrella. nytimes.com/2026/05/01/wor…

As with fringe Iranian voices who support a war on their own homeland were deliberately amplified, something similar is at play with Lebanon to make it seem as if the majority of Lebanese want to normalise with Israel. In fact, the overwhelming majority in Lebanon oppose Israel.

Note that this “Israeli liberal” distancing himself from Netanyahu is Ehud Olmert the Israeli PM who led the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon, oversaw the Dahiya Doctrine later used in the genocide in Gaza, & left 1200 Lebanese dead in 33 days. Israel’s left is virtually non-existent.

JUST IN: Reporter: "What was your reaction to the images that came out of Lebanon (after Israel launched 100 missiles in 10 minutes) on Wednesday?" Former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert: "Very disgusting. It's not something that we can be proud of"

This video of Israel soldiers casually throwing what appears to be a Palestinian youth off from the roof of a building has shocked the world. Look how comfortable they walk away after throwing the youth to his death. As if they have done it 100s of times before.

Resident doctors have written to the Secretary of State explaining why the Government’s latest offer fell short and what must be done to improve it. If a credible offer is made, resident doctors are prepared to postpone next week’s strikes. We remain committed to further negotiations to secure a deal that protects doctors, patients and the future of the NHS.

I'm confused. Shamima Begum is not allowed back into the UK because she was groomed into becoming an ISIS bride when she was just a child, but Al Golani, the man who was a literal leader of ISIS and Al Qaida is allowed to visit Downing Street? How does that work?

Excellent article by @ziadallal that not only brilliantly sketches the long-lasting influence of Third-worldism on Mahdi Amel's work (without being reducible to it), but is also a great introduction to Amel's project and what's at stake in it. read.dukeupress.edu/boundary-2/art…

In effect, the US & Israel demanding that the Lebanese Army push Lebanon into civil war (just like demanding Iran disband its missile programme, its only deterrent) was never intended to be a 'demand' but as pretext for war; it is utterly confused to treat it as an actual demand.
Nasser Elamine@nasserelamine1

What “LAF should disarm Hezbollah” actually means in practice is that the army should take advantage of Israels war on Lebanon and join by also attacking Hezbollah. There is no other way to understand this reprehensible, dangerous, and irresponsible demand of the army.

Any prescriptions made by any party regarding how we should proceed from here must admit to this conflict and the fracture it will by necessity cause in Lebanon so we can stop going in circles and make explicit to ourselves and to others what is entailed in our positions.

There is a material conflict in interests between southerners who know their best chance at ending occupation is armed resistance and the rest of Lebanon who’s interest lies in allowing for a part of the south to be occupied in exchange for peace in the rest of Lebanon.

Excellent article by @nasserelamine1 Sanctions are decisive but analytically insufficient — currency mismanagement & short-term fiscal fixes amplified external pressure; the article highlights the need for a state-led investment-focused strategy instead. alquds.co.uk/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D…

A masterful paper by @iyad_raya providing a surgical (and elegant) analysis of what it is exactly that makes Marx’s critique of political economy unique and radical, with a clear account of how the concepts of fetishism & alienation enable this critique. journals.openedition.org/ejpap/5553

CCTV footage from the National Hospital in Suwayda, dated July 16, 2025, has just emerged, showing members of Syria's State General Security executing one of the medical staff. The fact that members of the state can callously kill medical personnel in this manner is horrific, and the state's claim that its forces were acting as stabilizing forces upon entering the city will not age well in light of this. Not to mention the lingering question of responsibility for the massacre that followed at the hospital.
