I don’t know who the authors spoke with before writing this piece, but actually they didn't have to call anyone. You just had to read what @AnwarGargash had to say. The UAE's most senior diplomatic voice just told the world his country is doubling down on Washington, not pivoting away from it, that Iran's attacks will solidify the US role rather than erode it, and that Israeli influence in the Gulf will grow, not shrink. That single briefing falsifies the central thesis of this essay! The authors freeze the Gulf's pre-war hedging position in place and refuse to let it evolve. Nearly 5,000 projectiles later, that calculus has shifted fundamentally. GCC officials are demanding compensation, indicting Iran for premeditated deception, and declaring the regime illegitimate on its own terms. The piece itself says that MBS is backing the forceful approach, before quickly reframing it as dual-track to save the thesis. These are not governments seeking a managed exit. These are governments that have concluded the pre-war equilibrium was itself the problem, and that a fundamentally different Iranian dispensation serves their interests more than any ceasefire architecture could. This is exactly what Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan declared earlier that "what little trust there was before has been completely shattered" and that his country would use "every lever, political, economic, diplomatic and OTHERWISE" to stop the attacks. That is the vocabulary of a closed file. The piece misses this evolution entirely, assigning Gulf states the role of passive bystanders with no agency and no stake beyond survival. The idea that the GCC states Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan can assemble functional minilateral security arrangements while navigating trust and capability gaps, radically divergent threat perceptions, political systems, and military doctrines is theorizing untethered from any operational reality. The Helsinki analogy is absurd!! Helsinki 1975 worked because nuclear parity gave both blocs a shared, if grudging, interest in rules of the road. Unprovoked Iran has just fired nearly 5,000 projectiles at Gulf states over five weeks while Gulf states. Gargash publicly stated that Iran deceived its neighbors before the war despite their sincere efforts to avoid it, and demanded compensation for premeditated aggression. You do not build confidence mechanisms with a party your own diplomats are indicting for bad faith in real time. And the Soviet Union by 1975 was a status quo power. The Iranian regime is structurally the opposite: its entire ideological architecture is built on resistance, projection, and perpetual confrontation. Instability is not its failure. It is its instrument. Finally, the claim that Gulf populations have begun to question the value of hosting US bases is presented as established fact without a single poll, survey, protest count, social media data point, or named source to support it, making it an editorial opinion dressed as empirical observation. I’m stunned that @ForeignAffairs would publish such a poorly researched piece!!

To say that I have been disappointed in the Lebanese Armed Forces’ leadership under General Haykal and their willingness to take on Hezbollah is an understatement. Now, the LAF is openly talking about abandoning Christian villages in the South, subjecting them to Hezbollah attacks and trying to blame Israel. To the Lebanese government, this is a very dangerous decision and you will be held accountable for the consequences of this decision if Christian villages are attacked by Hezbollah. The LAF under the leadership of General Haykal has been a tremendous failure when it comes to fighting Hezbollah. timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry…

When Saddam sensed defeat, he desperately ordered "Allahu Akbar" inscribed on Iraq's flag. It was a man drowning, grabbing at the divine as a life raft. The echo in the statement below is unmistakable and damning. Both men are associating the symbol that is supposed to transcend all earthly loss with the most humiliating earthly losses imaginable. Every time a collapsing regime weaponizes God's name, as its last shield, it doesn't elevate the cause it contaminates the sacredness of symbol.

@NadimKoteich Weird that you are writing GCC and Israel and we all know that the priorities of GCC are not the same as the priorities of Israel. Israel's extremist government is declaring working toward great Israel which is a threat to GCC. So don't put everyone in the same bag. They are not

Two days of intense meetings in Washington, fresh from Abu Dhabi. Here is what I'm actually hearing — and what it means before Friday's deadline. 🔴 With Friday's deadline approaching, the five-day diplomatic window Trump opened for what he called a negotiating push, here is where I think we actually stand. The window is more a temperature-taking exercise than a breakthrough. Its real purpose is to determine whether the new leadership in Tehran is willing to make the kind of concessions to earn Israel and the GCC endorsement of whatever deal emerges. ➡️ Nothing I heard in Washington suggests they are. 🔴 The structural gap has not moved. Washington wants zero enrichment as the end state. Tehran insists enrichment is an inalienable right. That was the impasse before the bombs fell. Bombardment has not dissolved it, and if anything, it has hardened it into a matter of civilizational dignity for the Iranian side. In this regard, watch what Tehran does, not what it says. Ali Larijani, was replaced as Security Council head by Mohammad-Bagher Zolghadr, a hardline IRGC veteran whose entire career was built inside the revolutionary security apparatus. Simultaneously, Mojtaba Khamenei recalled 71-year-old Mohsen Rezaei, former IRGC commander-in-chief, out of active service for decades, to serve as his personal military adviser, now effectively heading a three-member wartime council alongside Ghalibaf and IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi. ➡️ When a system reaches into retirement to staff its inner circle with ideological generals, it is not preparing to make historic concessions. It is closing ranks. 🔴 What we are dealing with is a three-body problem that no one in the diplomatic corridors is being fully honest about. The United States wants a deal for economic and political reasons (oil prices, markets, and Trump's consuming need to declare victory, mid term elections calculus). Israel wants to continue until structural elimination is achieved, as a frozen Iran is, from Tel Aviv's perspective, a threat merely postponed. Similarly, the GCC countries want permanent degradation, not a temporary freeze that leaves Iran with enough capacity to reconstitute its missiles program and sustain its leverage over strait of Hormuz. Iran, meanwhile, is negotiating survival, not surrender, and specifically, the right to reconstitute. ➡️ These four sets of interests do not overlap, and this ia a structural problem. 🔴🔴 Friday will tell us something. But I would not mistake what it tells us for a resolution.
