📊 Plantar intrinsic foot muscle activation during functional exercises compared to isolated foot exercises in younger adults: 2023 🦶 🔍 Background: The study delved into the activation of plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) during functional exercises compared to isolated foot exercises, focusing on younger adults. 👥 Participants: The study included 29 young adults (21 females, 8 males) with an average age of 23.3 years. 📈 Key Findings: Functional vs. Isolated Exercises: Certain functional exercises demonstrated significantly greater mean EMG amplitude for PIFMs compared to isolated exercises. Dynamic Impact: Hopping and toe stance on compliant surfaces notably enhanced PIFM activation. Isometric vs. Concentric: Isometric exercises resulted in larger PIFM activation compared to concentric ones. 🧐 Implications: This study underscores the effectiveness of functional exercises in activating PIFMs, which can be easily integrated into daily routines. Provides valuable insights for physical therapists and fitness professionals in designing more effective foot muscle strengthening programs. Emphasises the potential of functional exercises for muscle activation and overall foot health and balance. 🔬 Future Research: Investigating the long-term impact of these exercises on muscle function and strength.
