United States and the early decapitation of its top leadership, Iran's military has proved to be more than a match to firepower that was brought down on the country's critical infrastructure and military targets thanks to a 20-year long preparation against exactly such a contingency. The mosaic defence system that is being talked about now is long ingrained in the Iranian system and is therefore not surprising that it is being effectively rolled out under extreme duress, says VAdm Sanjay Jasjit Singh (retd), a former C-in-C of India's Western Naval Command and a former Naval Attache posted in Tehran for three years. In this conversation with me, VAdm Singh points out that the mosaic defence strategy is a part and parcel of Iran's normal culture. It's civilization. It's an approach that they've always had, where they've trained themselves in that manner. That is all. All execution is decentralized, right? As opposed to many of the countries, which you consider as dictatorships. It is finally a large modern society. And all elements of government which are committed to a certain form of governance and ideology. The Supreme leader is actually the ultimate balancer, he's balancing competing interests, competing issues, and making sure that the overall strategic vision of Iran continues along a certain path, he says. He is not sure which way the war is headed at the moment but feels that Iran has used the advantage of geography very well to impose certain costs on the adversaries and forced the world to sit up in alarm.
