Fallout's 1950's AtomPunk setting was supposed to be a lens to explore a Post Apocalyptic America. The late great Shamus Young says it better than I ever could:  "It’s not the 1950s. It’s the year 2077 as the people of the 1950s would have imagined it....You roam all over the place in Fallout 1, and you meet a lot of strange people. But nowhere in that voyage do you meet comical throwbacks to the old world. You don’t meet any greaser gangs. There aren’t any old-timey prohibition-era gangsters with tommy guns. No pinstripe suits, no letterman jackets, no horn-rim glasses, no pompadour haircuts or beehive hairdos, no baseball players, no sundresses, no neckties, no newsies, and not a single gumshoe. There aren’t any wacky DJs playing 200 year old doo-wop songs. The game is not subtle about this. The old world is fucking gone. Like, that’s the point. But then Bethesda got their hands on the Fallout license and they somehow thought it was about a 1950s-flavored apocalypse. That’s multiple layers of wrong."

Did FPS games peak in the 90s? I guess the newer ones have better graphics, but do they really "feel" better in terms of gameplay and fun? Unreal Tournament (Epic Games, 1999) was one of the best of its kind. A favorite for our LAN sessions back in the day. Carrying a 21" mintor over to your friend's house felt a little less heavy when you knew you'd be playing Unreal later that day... Exellent and colorful graphics (even on PCs that weren't high end, like those you needed for Quake III Arena for example), great sound, and your typical capture the flag or deathmatches - I mean, what more did you need? Plenty of "Game of the Year" nominations (with some wins), the highest critcal acclaim, and massive sales numbers. I think we can all agree that Unreal Tournament belongs in the Hall of Fame of FPS games. Or maybe I am just getting old and gloryfing things from the past too much.

I'm critical of Zoomers but I do think kids can be smart and they deserve better than Bethesda slop forever. If you're young try Fallout 1 and 2. Give it time. Watch a tutorial. Shit, read the manual! These are games worth the effort.

This is what Fallout is to me. Forever.

@TheVaultTecInc Fallout 4 a lot of fun, that's true, but it didn't feel like a Fallout game. Like I said, it felt like a ridiculous circus. I think Bethesda doesn't know how to maintain a narrative, lore, and continuity

@TheVaultTecInc The problems led to Bethesda acquiring the Fallout franchise, that's a fact, just as since Fallout 4 (and 76) they've turned the wasteland into an absurd circus devoid of story and depth. I think Fallout 3 is still somewhat decent.

Do you think the Fallout IP would be better if the original creators had obtained the license? What engine would they even use for future Fallouts? I mean, the prototype Fallout 3 (Van Buren) was a 3D attempt of the old (isometric) playstyle, and they didn't have the money.

Chris Avellone is right. You can see the vitriol and hate they have for the franchise in the TV show. Everything is a joke or comedic. Lore is stripped away for a sight gag. It’s a complete slap in the face for long time fans. If you only played 4. You like it.

Man, they really should make another isometric Fallout game. Give it a smaller scope/budget and a passionate team and I think they could make something really special.
