OpenClaw went from a weekend WhatsApp hack to 316,000 GitHub stars in 4 months. For context: React took over a decade to reach 243,000. Linux sits at 218,000. Vue is at 210,000. A solo developer in Austria built a tool in his bedroom, got a cease-and-desist from Anthropic, rebranded twice in 3 weeks, almost deleted the entire project, and ended up joining OpenAI after both Zuckerberg and Altman made billion-dollar bids. Steinberger was hemorrhaging $10,000 to $20,000 a month running it. He told Lex Fridman he was "close to crying" and that "everything's fucked." The second rebrand required what he called "Manhattan Project-level secrecy" because crypto scammers were squatting on every possible name variant.
