This is huge. - Publishers running your submitted books through AI systems adds your books to the AI training data without your consent. - Your book of 300-500 pages is being reduced to an AI summary and not "read" by editors. - An AI summary will be what your book is accepted or rejected on. - If the publisher tests your book to see if it was written with AI, it will get a false positive as the AI will recognise the book from it's training data, due to this process. This has to stop and publishers must be forced by agents and writers unions to sign agreements for every book, prior to 'reading' stating that they will not put submitted books through AI systems without written consent.

Curtis Brown (@CWAgencyUK) has voiced concern about editors using ChatGPT to assess confidential manuscripts, as more literary agencies introduce clauses around Artificial Intelligence into contracts 👇

FFmpeg is moving to Rust 🦀 Our use of C and Assembly in FFmpeg has been an unacceptable violation of safety. FFmpeg will be running 10x slower - but we're doing it for your safety. All your videos will appear green - safety first, working software later.

there is this singular giant qing dynasty encyclopedia that literally fills an entire room at NUS (one book!) and I’ve often wondered what an LLM trained on it would sound like

Want to talk to the past? Here is an LLM "trained entirely from scratch on a corpus of over 28,000 Victorian-era British texts published between 1837 and 1899, drawn from a dataset made available by the British Library." Quite different from an LLM roleplaying a Victorian.

this guy let an AI agent handle his scam texts for a week a scammer asked him to buy a $500 gift card the agent spent 4 hours "driving" to target. sent status updates like "i'm at the red light now, there's a very handsome squirrel on the sidewalk. do you think he's married?" then it said "i forgot my purse, going back home. wait, this isn't my house" it sent a screenshot of a captcha to the scammer claiming its "eyes were blurry" and it couldn't see the buttons to wire money the scammer actually solved the captcha for the AI the scammer eventually typed: "please just stop talking. i don't want the money anymore. god bless you but leave me alone" total time wasted for the guy was 14 hours the script should be open source lol

Did you know the Crazy Frog sound was made by a 17-year-old boy in Sweden who was just trying to imitate the sound of a two-stroke engine with his mouth? His name was Daniel Malmedahl. He recorded it in 1997 as a joke, uploaded it to the internet, and forgot about it. Six years later, a Swedish animator stumbled across the file, spent eight weeks building a character around it, and posted it online. He had no idea who made the sound. The credits just said anonymous. A ringtone company found it, renamed the character Crazy Frog, and made over 400 million dollars. Daniel was 24 and working as a computer components salesman when it peaked.

I had read this on one of those long, boring flights. If we look at the skeleton of a chimpanzee/a pig, they lack a specific cord in their neck called the Nuchal Ligament. We have this elastic band connecting the skull to the spine. This ligament has 0 function in walking. Its only job is to keep our head from wobbling violently while we run. Cos we developed this, we can keep our eyes fixed on a horizon/a moving prey while our body is bouncing in a full gallop. We are essentially steadicam hunters :)
Massimo@Rainmaker1973

Did you know? Humans are among the very top mammals for endurance running. While we aren't the best sprinters, our slow-twitch muscles and unique ability to sweat allow us to run steadily for long distances in hot weather to outlast prey.

The reason we know dinosaurs existed, and were wiped out by an asteroid, is that no matter where you dig in the world, you’ll find a distinct layer of clay. All dinosaur fossils are found below this layer, and never above it! This layer has iridium that is very rare on earth but found in asteroids. It is called K-T (Short for Cretaceous-Tertiary) boundary
