Our new spring issue is live! Full of many great pieces—learn some lessons in smoking, or maybe take a look at past and future exhibits at the mutter museum. Or, read about the house that’s taken over. #WritingCommunity

I’m in the mood for a novella, something short. Something magical. Something full of surprises. Any recommendations?

@MrHWM The Lime Twig comes to mind. it’s tonally-focused to the extreme. nearly the whole plot is just… alluded to

@MrHWM helpful language for a thing i spend lots of time thinking about. writing “events” often feels artificial: “okay, lemme inject some *drama* right… here.” i’m pondering ways to sort of embed needed “events” in the text - to weave them into a atmospheric/tonal fabric

the failure of a lot of stories and novels that begin by moving tonally is that they fall into the trap of concluding outside of the tonal mode—plot in other words. the need to resolve the movement of the piece lends itself to having an "event." the wrong kind of clarity.

@MrHWM & Steinbeck was contemporary to Faulkner/ Hemingway. the latter two are so present in convos, i’d say largely for being prose stylists. but Steinbeck, whom i see as more a pure storyteller, is overlooked. all 3 are great, but interesting to ponder reasons for the diff legacies

"The Smoke of the Land Went Up," by Andrew Cominelli, is dystopic, fast-paced, and sexually charged. It is the first story I've ever read about a New Orleans pedicab driver - which made sense when I found out that Andrew is a New Orleans pedicab driver! guernicamag.com/the-smoke-of-t…

Our March issue of @GuernicaMag is here! I'm pleased to be publishing two dynamic stories. The great Itamar Vieira Junior's "Black Wing Dragging Across the Sand," in marvelous translation by Johnny Lorenz, is a dynamic, surprising Clarice Lispector homage guernicamag.com/black-wing-dra…

This is the downside of Goodreads dying! The 🇺🇸 Monolinguals are switching to Twitter 😂 “Even though poor Mauro Javier doesn’t use big words, he really thinks big feelings come from big words.” One star
