Did you know Pokémon was meant to end after the first movie? Back in 1997, the Pokémon anime writer Takeshi Shudo was hired, and nobody thought it waa going to last, due to Ash's Adventure through Kanto was only meant to last a year and a half. Shudo wasn't treating Pokémon like a kids anime, the reasoning would be because of what he believed Pokémon actually was. Within December 1997, the episode 'Cyber Soldier Porygon' aired, and there were a reported 685 viewers hospitalised due to the flashing lights, so the whole show got pulled for 4 months whilst the executives handled the fallout. Due to this, Shudo was not supervised whilst writing Mewtwo Strikes Back (Pokémon: The First Movie) and this is why it has quite a dark theme towards it. But the most dark thing that was written for this film never made it to the final cut of the film. Because Shudo was certain the movie would be the end of Ash's Adventure, he created an existential ending where Ash was on old man looking back at his journey with Pokémon thinking they were just a fantasy, until he hears his mothers' voice telling him to get to bed because tomorrow he leaves on his journey. The next morning he wakes up as a boy again and runs out the door. This was confirmed that he wrote this is his blog post a year before he passed away in 2009. Imagine if the Pokémon we know today didn't exist anymore?
