@chrisbriem Apparently there are no building codes in Pittsburgh. Or no code enforcement. Or owner is well connected and protected. Can you name the owner? Or hidden behind some legal entity. LLC. LP. Trust.

Just a different angle, but again, how has this property directly across the street from the main entrance of Children’s Hospital remained in this state, boarded up, unused and un-redeveloped, for decades?

@PortGordon_ @chrisbriem very common in pgh. literally hundreds of properties with the exact same scenario. what's unusual, but still not unique, is it's on a main street in an area that's seen investment. what's unique, why people always notice it, is the stone facade. that's it.

@chrisbriem Surprisingly, the owner is up to date on property taxes. Looks like he purchased it in 2002 and has been boarded up since at least 2007 (oldest street view image). Probably was going to be an apartment investment property he gave up on.

@chrisbriem i like how you phrase it as if the hospital is some sort of amenity here.... it could be if it were an amish sect's collective second home, perhaps.

The job offers went out last night for the new @PittsburghPG. I did not receive one. So, after 41 years, Friday will be my last day at the paper. All the best to my colleagues. Thanks to all the musicians for all the great conversations over the years.

@hecubian_devil yay endless sprawl. there's certainly something to be said for getting housing costs down, but when it relies entirely on increasing transportation costs, particularly time-cost, voters do eventually notice.

Wow I guess Dallas landlords are way less greedy than landlords in other cities, or interest rates are dramatically lower, or there’s no demand because everyone is leaving. Supply can’t lower prices, so it must be those other things…
Rick Palacios Jr.@RickPalaciosJr

In #Dallas, renting a home hasn’t been this affordable since 2008.

@Dazzleox strictly-regulated and well-managed hunting is preferable to poaching, all things considered, but ideally one would 'simply' solve the poaching problem, which people seem to have trouble doing, for a variety of reasons. at least he was hunting antelope!

I said (accurately) that is not true and that I think the car they want moved is staying in the same building as them. It's light a light bulb went off where they had never heard of multiple units under one roof before. "Oh damn! How do people even park then?"

Airbnb person staying next door for the draft knocked on my door to ask if I could move the car "in front of our house" because its "illegal to park in front of another house."

@RyanDeto call the suburban agencies and ask how much their service was utilized, and whether their park and rides were full.

@sixfloors @RyanDeto nah, capacity is 97,000. 320,000 is from counting people each time they enter, so could be people leaving and coming back, or different people.

@RyanDeto Then there's math: Google Maps satellite view of the full Lot 1 footprint (surface + garage footprint combined) looks roughly 500–600 ft long × 300 ft wide, suggesting a total parcel of around 150,000–180,000 sq ft. Packed festival (3 sq ft per person)~40,000 attendees.

@RyanDeto not sure private entities have any ability to issue tickets? pretty sure the law only gives them 'towing'? (which is dumb, but so is being mad that people are parking in your otherwise empty parking lot.)

UPDATE: PRT tells me Monroeville park and ride back open, they have secured an 100 additional spots and anticipate securing more this afternoon. The mall told PRT that it will ticket people who park in the mall lots and ride the football Flyer.
Ryan Deto@RyanDeto

Monroeville Mall park and ride already at capacity an hour before Draft campus opens, this is where people pick up the free Football Flyer buses. Seems like Pittsburghers really followed “don’t drive” suggestion because traffic on interstates is non existent.

@JoshLipnik there was a time on this app where 'yimbys' would defend bland buildings, alienating everyone, but nobody on 'the other side' ever uttered a word about LIHTC bloat, or knew what PBVs were. elites yelling at each other about how they wanted 'affordability' only under their terms.

@JoshLipnik I remember going downtown a few years ago (pre-COVID, say 2018-19) and commenting to the people I was with that I noticed there were newly paved streets and new curbs and I was surprised.

i find the prominent international pistons fans pretty annoying but if you think they are some sort of mk-ultra level psyop instead of a small line item on the nba's marketing budget then you should get off your phone and donate your brain to science.

We need strong unions and collective bargaining to raise wages at point of production, plus redistribution to fund a welfare state. Antitrust can help at the margins, especially against monopsony, but it’s not a substitute for a vision of worker power, community, and equality.
Edward-Isaac Dovere@IsaacDovere

NEW from me: Lina Khan's phone has been ringing w/prospective 2028 Dems, as she pushes for an even more aggressive anti-trust stance, adding tools from Trump. @ewarren: “If you’re a leader who wants to deliver on affordability, it’s a smart move to call" cnn.com/2026/04/20/pol…
