It is ironic that one of the most enduring myths created by Kremlin propaganda is the myth of Putin’s popularity with Russians. The fact is that he has never won an election that could be considered free and fair by international standards.

The War Could End—But Trump and Congress Refuse to Act
In a recent interview, prominent historian Timothy Snyder delivered a stark warning: the war in Ukraine could be ended, but political cowardice in Washington—particularly from Donald Trump and his loyalists in Congress—is keeping it alive.
Snyder didn’t mince words. He called out Trump’s posturing on Russia and Ukraine as hollow, performative, and dangerous. While Trump occasionally tosses out anti-Putin soundbites, Snyder says they’re meaningless without policy muscle—and Trump has shown no interest in serious action. Far from opposing Putin, Trump’s erratic rhetoric and admiration for authoritarian strongmen send signals of permission, not resistance.
But it’s not just Trump. Congress has the power to help end the war—right now. Snyder argues the U.S. could tip the balance by enforcing tighter sanctions on Russia and dramatically expanding weapons aid to Ukraine. These aren’t far-fetched ideas; they’re practical steps with bipartisan historical precedent. But the current Congress, led by Speaker Mike Johnson—a staunch Trump ally—has chosen gridlock over global leadership.
Snyder warns this isn't just about Ukraine. It’s a mirror for America’s own struggles with freedom and responsibility. In his 2023 book On Freedom, he challenges the myth that Americans are inherently the freest people in the world. True freedom, he insists, is earned—not inherited—and it demands action, courage, and risk.
As Americans honor Memorial Day, Snyder poses an uncomfortable question: are we still willing to take risks for liberty, or are we numbly watching it erode? He cautions that clinging to patriotic rituals without real civic action is a fast track to losing democracy altogether.
The message is clear: the war could be ended, democracy could be defended—but not if Congress and Trump keep choosing inaction over courage.
