Since I was hard on Tadanobu Asano ( the “Japanese guy” from Thor) I should mention that he was excellent in Shogun the Hulu TV show. If you haven’t watched it, I would recommend.

RE the Odyssey controversy. I realized there’s a movie I like that does race-swapping. Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall in Thor. Thor worked and Heimdall worked too, but would it have been better if a decent white actor played Heimdall? Probably. (The same goes for the Japanese guy who plays Hogun). It could be that Heimdall worked because people (including myself) were not really familiar with Norse myth or the comics and so had no picture in their minds of what Heimdall is supposed to look like. Race- swapping Helen of Troy feels worse because she is an icon of Western literature, even if her role in the Odyssey is minor. In general, race-swapping is like the moment in a puppet show when the puppet master shows his hand. It makes it less real. Apart from the artistic problem with race-swapping, what is the political problem? Race-swapping indicates that Hollywood is trying to do affirmative action in film, which is good to oppose from a right-wing perspective. People should be cast purely based on their merits as an actor and their visual fit for the role, not based on race.

Also, I’m tired of people saying that people shouldn’t get mad at a movie before they’ve seen it. The issue that have made people mad is apparent without seeing the movie.

Ben makes the terrible argument that because no one in the movie is Greek, therefore we shouldn’t really be bothered by a black actress playing Helen of Troy. I don’t think I need to point out how stupid that is.

@neontaster @clairlemon Whether the Odyssey is enjoyable or not is irrelevant. It could have been better without stupid casting decisions. And intersectional feminism should be opposed in film. People should avoid supporting it.
