Alan Mack flew Chinooks for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment for seventeen years. Chief Warrant Officer 5. Senior MH-47 pilot. Flight lead. Instructor. He was the pilot in command of Razor 03 on Takur Ghar — the aircraft shot up trying to insert a SEAL element on top of the mountain that became Roberts Ridge. He has logged over 6,700 flight hours, took rounds through his cockpit on Anaconda, ran fog approaches into walled compounds in Iraq, and helped write the procedures the Night Stalkers still use to land in zero visibility. After retiring, he commanded the flight detachment at West Point and spent a decade running emergency management for a New York county. I’m loving all the new aviation experts who have never actually flown anything other than their own opinions. This accident isn’t about DEI or gender, it is about experience and currency. The airspace is complex and given her overall time in aircraft and recency of flights (currency) she was likely behind the aircraft and task saturated/overwhlemed, which is just as likely to happen to man or woman. Aviation accidents happen, and they are tragic enough without the pile on.

Remember the DC helicopter crash in January that killed 64 people, including 12 children? Turns out the female pilot who was flying was given multiple warnings and was directly told by her male instructor/copilot to turn the opposite direction of the passenger jet to avoid a collision. She ignored him and flew straight into it.

For all the newfound aviation experts out there who have about twelve hours on the job rushing to blame the absolute tragedy in DC on Trump, you may want to take a deep breath and sit this one out. The families don’t need to hear your thoughts, or politicization of this. No actions taken by the incoming administration caused this. Humans make errors.
