@MadsDavies @RevLauraBH Without a power of enforcement, the CofE's ability to close churchyards isn't a real benefit and it isn't a good safeguard of these important public spaces and their condition.

@MadsDavies @RevLauraBH As for closed churchyards, I'm afraid that councils don't maintain them well and there's no enforcement mechanism on their duties. That's for lots of reasons, including sensible priorities in council budgets.

🧵 I have been reading the Law Commission’s Burial and Cremation Report and three things feel especially important for churches and PCCs. 1. A national maintenance standard is coming, and many churches simply do not have the people or money to meet it.
