@unormal The trick is to string it together with another model that just removes backgrounds.

@RowanFuture The timeline to AGI has gotten a lot shorter in the last couple years. We're not there yet, but we can see it from here.

programming requires enough critical and logical thinking that an AI would literally need to be an AGI to do it as well as a human overall, at that point there's other things to worry about 😂

@Shoehead_art We managed to make the tiny-indie-studio thing work for longer than we should have, but it also comes with so much stress and bullshit that isn't just making games. I didn't think I'd enjoy doing gamedev contract work, but I probably lucked out and found a cool team.

@Shoehead_art Yeah, I've been doing the indie thing for ages because I wanted to make games but I didn't want to move. Honestly, before I made a serious go of the indie thing I wouldn't have had any skills worth hiring for. I'm not hating remote contract work + personal projects though lately.

the map can now selectively display markers, networks (cyber / power / alarm) or nothing. moving on to showing objective locations- this will take time as I figure out the overall data model for this stuff.

@Shoehead_art They look great. I'm still waffling over whether I want to do 8x8 or 16x16 in my current project, but you're making a solid case for 16x16.

and this is why I am going to try to make a massive open-world looter-shooter. not because I'm confident I can pull it off, but because I've been told that I can't so many damn times by so many people! you don't know what is possible! my failure is only LIKELY. not certain! =)

How would you describe your game using only the names of up to 3 other games?

@DeveloperHarris Would be a fun VR game. I can imagine something where you're restricted to your habitat (matching the bounds of your room space) and you have to do everything else with satellites/drones.

@unormal Yeah, I learned in school you just have to cite sources and it's fine.

@ArturSmiarowski @JordyGuedes Hmm, yeah, there are probably lessons to take from dnd here. Sometimes failing can be fun if the failure can become part of the story. Revenge lets you continue the story with a new goal, so it fits. Similar to a TPK and the next party is after revenge for the first.

@JordyGuedes That could be quite rewarding, taking revenge and getting some stuff back for it.

Permadeath offers an extra challenge with high-stakes combat and emotional triggers (for wins and losses). But the cost of losing all progress can be too much for these benefits alone. Besides meta-progression, what else can be used to offset that cost?

I’ve been thinking about New Year’s resolutions for game devs. Before setting a million goals to learn new things, consider this quote. The creator of Spelunky said in his book: “limiting the number of new things you have to learn is crucial to finishing your projects"

@RubyBenji I've always wanted to make a game that involved magic item crafting where the power of the items is scaled based on how much of some rare resource you put into it. Might mess around with it on my current prototype project. Could be a fun meta progression.

has a game ever allowed a magic user decide how much energy/mana to put into a cast of a spell? I've been binging a lot of DBZ videos and it seems in DBZ characters can kind of decide how much energy to put into an attack. would be interesting for game too 🤔

@Wanderlustin I also get ocular (no pain) migraines every now and then, always figured that might be related.

@Wanderlustin I have something that sounds similar that happens from time to time. I usually see weird white flashes zooming around the area, and it goes dark for a minute or two. Eye doctor said I had lattice degeneration, but wasn't sure if it was the cause of the transient loss of vision.
