Today, we share a breakthrough on the planar unit distance problem, a famous open question first posed by Paul Erdős in 1946. For nearly 80 years, mathematicians believed the best possible solutions looked roughly like square grids. An OpenAI model has now disproved that belief, discovering an entirely new family of constructions that performs better. This marks the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to a field of mathematics.

OPENAI DROPPED A PDF ON HOW THEY USE CODEX INTERNALLY and it's actually useful their engineers across security, infra, frontend, and api teams use it daily for: ▫️ understanding unfamiliar codebases fast (especially during incidents) ▫️ refactoring changes that span dozens of files ▫️ generating tests for edge cases devs usually miss ▫️ scaffolding boilerplate so you ship faster ▫️ staying in flow when your calendar is a disaster the one that hit different: one engineer said "i was in meetings all day and still merged 4 PRs because codex was working in the background" cdn.openai.com/pdf/6a2631dc-7…

not gonna lie, /side might be one of my favourite features in the codex app while using extra high reasoning because the main thread is so slow also pretty cool that you can actually have more than one side chat 👀 kinda wish they could make edits though

The Thursdays continue! Today: Codex Chrome extension Codex could already use Chrome via Computer Use, but it took over your browser and could only work on one tab at a time. Today unlocks speed & parallelism: Multiple agents/subagents, multiple tabs. It's magical to watch ✨
OpenAI@OpenAI

Codex now works directly in Chrome on macOS and Windows. It’s even better at working with apps and sites in Chrome, and now works in parallel across tabs in the background without taking over your browser. To get started, install the Chrome plugin in the Codex app.

this has aged very well GPT 5.5 instant & deep research are the only reasons to use the app, but Codex is by far the best value in AI subscriptions today
Aaron Makelky@theaaron

I haven't used @ChatGPTapp a single time in 2026 But the $20 /month Plus plan has never been a better deal How can both statements both be true at the same time? @OpenAIDevs Codex. Especially since the double rate limits (while Claude has been tightening theirs), Codex has been the best value in paid AI tools. Here is a list of what I have found Codex to be helpful for: + keeping projects synced across environments (GitHub + local + deployed) + organizing local files with consistent naming & folder structures + anything Claude Cowork could do with your local files + deep dives into complex research or codebases + kicking off video projects with the @descript API + reporting & data analysis If you are finding ChatGPT itself less valuable these days (I know I was!), or hitting rate limits on Claude, try using Codex before you cancel

It's so interesting to me how drastically different the personalities of Opus 4.7 and GPT 5.5 are. GPT 5.5 is smart, hardworking, slightly autistic and doesn't want to talk much. Huge preference for diving into tasks and hammering tasks out over long, long periods. Opus 4.7 is also obviously smart, but the only way to accurately describe Opus 4.7 is that he is charismatic but extremely lazy, talks a lot, but doesn't like to get work done. The only saving grace of Opus 4.7 is that he really does have an eye for design. -- Opus 4.7 is the quintessential toxic employee you need to fire while GPT 5.5 is the one you're glad to have on the team, but wished you could understand him better / have a more pleasant time interacting with him.

@thsottiaux I really like talking to ChatGPT in a conversational way sometimes, I wish it did not need to consume codex tokens. It would be nice it codex could refer to the conversation history locally (after talking to chat), it makes it even easier to continue developing in one place.

We are seeing strong traction and working to improve Codex for scientists across mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and more. What do you wish it were capable of that it cannot do today?
