¡No uses JavaScript para truncar líneas de texto! Lo puedes conseguir con CSS y line-clamp. Puedes incluso indicar el número de líneas a mostrar. Aunque la sintaxis te sorprenda, su soporte es del 96%. Chrome, Safari y Firefox lo soportan sin problemas:
