30-06 Ballistic Facts: You cannot determine or predict any terminal ballistic outcome without knowing the following variables: - Ammunition source: factory or handloads - Ammunition type: low-recoil, varmint, big game, or dozens of other commercial options - Ammunition condition: old/new, exposed to elements or moisture - Projectile weight: .30-06 is available from 55 gr to 220 gr+ - Projectile type: FMJ, soft point, ballistic tip, frangible, TUI, and dozens more commercial designs with vastly different terminal performance - Muzzle velocity - Projectile stabilization: determined by proper twist rate for the projectile weight; also affected by barrel defects, damage, or condition You must know all—or at least several—of these variables to make any valid ballistic prediction. That is objective fact. Anyone claiming otherwise is wrong. No one in the public knows a single one of these details. This list does not include external variables that can further affect terminal ballistics. Until this information is available, anyone claiming what the round “should” or “should not” have done is purely speculating.
