Understanding the 4i Technique is critical in today’s game and has become a foundational alignment within multiple defensive structures across football.
Aligned on the inside shade of the offensive tackle, the 4i allows a defensive lineman to control the B Gap, disrupt inside zone concepts, create difficult double teams, and force offenses to adjust blocking angles and run fits.
Why the 4i is valued defensively ⬇️
✅ Controls the B Gap and interior run lanes
✅ Creates tougher combination blocks for offensive linemen
✅ Forces cutbacks and disrupts timing in the run game
✅ Creates favorable one on one opportunities
✅ Helps collapse the pocket from the interior
✅ Allows linebackers to play cleaner and faster downhill
Success within the 4i is built on discipline, leverage, violent hands, pad level, and the ability to control space at the point of attack.
Defensive linemen must understand not only where they align, but why the technique is being utilized within the structure of the defense.
Control your gap. Control the line of scrimmage. Finish the play.

@Bobby_QUE7 I had a kid tell me he believes looking and leaning means panicking. I knew right there I was needed more than ever out here

Fear of their kids getting beat. Not knowing how to properly adjust their kids focus and technique so they can start getting the desired outcome. It’s actually a pandemic in the modern football world that DBs are scared to get INTs

I’m not a huge fan of guys playing through the hands when they are in phase down field. This is something that is being taught by multiple DB coaches around the country and I’m curious as to why. The game is about the ball. Find the football. Take the football.

I definitely agree. If the Y is on (obviously) or he’s off in a Wing position that’s 11p. Once that Y goes inside the Tackle he becomes an H and it’s now 20p

@ChimChek Jab one way and ghost the opposite. That shoulder gotta get skinny and low

We use to be able to run a 4.3 through the shins of the tackle. Now they don't allow the DBs to cut. I'm curious what you coaches teach corners to do now?

Someone such as myself who likes trying the best every city has to offer would risk them Bounty Hunters pressing me for a 10/10 meal

@DaveDobrik @Deuce1042 Precisely like this. I have control of the rout and can play top down on the back shoulder. But if that ball got some flight time it’s a seamless move to snap your head, put your shoulder in the receiver pec, and use your hips to run him off his line

I think DBs stopped turning around and finding the ball because they’re terrified of getting back shouldered.

Less interceptions. Same elite play. So what changed? “Man, f*** them hands.” Charles Woodson on why DBs aren’t getting picks anymore…
