last year, my cousin started having this sharp pain in her lower back and stomach. it wasn’t constant, but when it came, she’d double over. sometimes she couldn’t even stand straight. we went to the clinic with her. the doctor barely looked up from his computer and said, “probably just muscle pain.” “maybe period cramps.” “take paracetamol.” no scan. no tests. she tried to believe him. but the pain kept coming back. stronger. longer. some nights she cried quietly in her room so no one would worry. after three months, she finally fainted in the bathroom. that time, in the emergency room, they rushed her for imaging. it was a KIDNEY INFECTION that had spread. she needed IV antibiotics and had to stay in the hospital for a week. when we told the nurse she’d been complaining for months, she just said, “women tend to tolerate pain better.” like that was a compliment. like it wasn’t the reason no one listened.
