Not that kind of doctor (PhD, Computer Info Sys). Reformed software developer. Opinions are my own. Sometimes wrong. @[email protected] @alttag.bsky.social

There has been some real enshitification of this hell site, and I’ve stuck around after all the good and moral people left because inertia (and a doomscrolling addiction). But this. This makes me hate myself for giving this is site any support at all.

@danprimack @oneunderscore__ The bottom is us staying here, tacitly supporting it. We could go. We could do the moral thing, and leave.

Nothing to see here, just the owner of this site and a presidential candidate chatting it up with a man indicted for rape/human trafficking and another who lied about dead kids to harass their grieving parents. This may really be the bottom.

@oneunderscore__ If you (like me) are still here on this site, you are giving support to this. Makes me sick to my stomach. It’s time to leave for somewhere—anywhere—nicer.

@JamesDeWeese18 @itsmichalll @yashar I don’t think that’s entirely fair. Hamas goes out of their way to use civilians as shields, so “getting out of the way” isn’t really a viable option.

@itsmichalll @yashar You get a permenat cease fire with a group that wants ceaseless war by eliminating the group. The Israelis get it. It is not their fault that "innocents" refuse to get out of they way.

Bernie Sanders on Face The Nation: “I don’t know how you can have a permanent ceasefire with Hamas who has said before October 7 and after October 7 that they want to destroy Israel and they want a permanent war. I don’t know how you have a permanent ceasefire with an attitude like that.” Sanders noted earlier that he is only in favor of a humanitarian pause.

@tomer_stern @benconomics I guess I should add: anyone w/ masters degree or higher and a focus in statistics (econometrics!), data science, A/I, machine learning, or NLP, and who is willing to move to the middle of nowhere should feel free to send me a resumé. The hiring cycle takes 6+ months though…

@tomer_stern @benconomics $51K – $67K for most of the U.S. (including locality), but yeah, that sounds waaay low. Even bachelors-only candidates in my field at my org would be closer to GS-9 numbers. Those with a masters degree start higher; PhDs more so. opm.gov/policy-data-ov…

Econ market is chaning...however extensive margin of hiring matters too. Amazon could hire dozens of econs with one JOE ad. Also I've heard two govt orgs giving exploding job offers at GS8 after a 30 min interview. Anybody else hearing this?
John Cawley@cawley_john

From our AEA cttee on the job market, an update on the #EconJobMarket. In brief, the # of job listings is down, esp. nonacademic. Summary with graphs follows, with full report at: aeaweb.org/joe/communicat… Cc: @AEAInformation @JOE_listings @AEACSWEP @LGBTQ_Econ #EconTwitter 1/5

States that went all in on tutoring (using high-dosage and regular school day models) such as Illinois recovered much more of the learning losses than others.

@LaurenMaffeo My guy, we reviewed proposals proposals ranging from quantum computing, materials science, A/I, electromagnetics, geo modeling, education, cyber security, botany, and org behavior, and more, all competing for the same pot of funding. Our job is grading impact, not his field.

@LaurenMaffeo One of our female reviewers for project funding selection got told the opposite by a guy deep in a niche field. He told the entire panel “it’s unethical to review proposals for topics you’re not experts in.” It’s among the stupidest things this PhD has said.

@claudferraz @jenniferdoleac @ubcVSE (Not pointing fingers at you.) When I see numbers like this and institutions still don’t hire women proportionately, maybe it’s not really a “pipeline” problem.

We received almost 700 applications for assistant professor positions at @ubcVSE. We are sending out 41 invitations for interviews. It was very hard to choose, so many great papers out there. Looking forward to meeting all candidates and learning about their work

@RnaudBertrand @nhannahjones Pre WWII was a different style of war-making, so comparisons are skewed. It is not (yet) higher than WWII. Civilian population density has increased remarkably from WWII on, so statistically speaking increased civilian deaths proportion growth is likely without altered tactics.

Just how bad is Gaza? A study just concluded the "civilian proportion of deaths is HIGHER THAN THAT IN ALL WORLD CONFLICTS IN 20TH CENTURY" And that's 20TH CENTURY, you know, the one with both world wars. The horror we're seeing is truly unprecedented. theguardian.com/world/2023/dec…

Outstanding news: Wisconsin Board of Regents votes 9-8 to reject the blackmail deal. Again, the legislature is trying to exert ideological control over university decisions through blackmail. The regents have said: No. Come back when you have the votes. dailycardinal.com/article/2023/1…
