Her family has been displaced around 15 times since the start of the genocide, after their seventh-floor apartment, which they had purchased for $40,000, was completely destroyed by bombings; they fled on foot over two days, leaving behind nearly all possessions, including the children's birth certificates. Mervat was diagnosed with breast cancer before the genocide, with her last mammogram in April 2023, and she requires regular testing and a biopsy for a growing lump, but she has been unable to afford or access the necessary medical care since October, 2023 due to the lack of functioning hospitals and financial constraints. Her father-in-law also needs eye surgery for fluid buildup. The family is currently months behind on rent, with the landlord pressing for payment, and Mervat prioritizes saving any small amounts she receives toward this debt.
