ICYMI - It's legal to access MAID in 🇨🇦 for patients dying of cancer - why not for patients struggling with debilitating mental illness? "Change My Mind" podcast talks to Canadian actress Claire Brosseau. New pod drops May 28th on involuntary treatment. linktr.ee/steeletalk

@amclinehan @KristaCarrNB Thank you @amclinehan. Many opponents of AD in the UK are sharing footage from the #AMAD meetings. I don’t think they understand that those testifying have various views and may present questionable testimony. I’d like to know to which cases @KristaCarrNB was referring

I saw @KristaCarrNB reposted the Miriam Lancaster story. Are these fake stories, made up by deeply religious folks to discredit #MAID, what she’s basing her testimony on? If not, what is her evidence? I may be wrong, but aren’t the majority of those who receive AD in Canada able-bodied people dying from cancer? @BakerIdris @jamesdownar

“We answer calls weekly from individuals with a disability, who are offered MAiD when they attempted to access the medical system, for everything from a bruised hip to pneumonia.” - Krista Carr (CEO, Inclusion Canada) #AMAD #CdnPoli

@TonyMarra_1 @KristaCarrNB Yes I agree. Also inclusion Canada in no way represents the entire heterogenous ‘disability’ community. ALS organization, Parkinson’s org, Alz organization all support access to MAID for capable people suffering intolerably with these conditions.

@JayGenXer These newborns are dying from complex conditions. This is just allowing the parents to end the suffering.

🚨 BREAKING: Canada’s MAiD euthanasia machine just hit rock bottom. A Quebec physician has formally suggested assisted suicide for infants — babies from birth to one year old with severe deformities and syndromes. Parents “should have the opportunity” to have their newborn killed. Federal committees are now pushing to expand MAiD to “mature minors” (children), where a doctor — not the parents — decides if the kid can “consent” to their own death. Ontario’s Chief Coroner confirms hundreds of MAiD deaths are driven by poverty, loneliness, and lack of housing — not terminal illness. People are being offered lethal injection because they feel like a burden. This isn’t healthcare.
This is a moral horror show. Years of Liberal-NDP rule have turned Canada into one of the most dangerous places on Earth for the vulnerable — from newborns to the poor. Danielle Smith is fighting this insanity in Alberta. The rest of the country needs to wake the hell up before it gets even worse. @TonyMarra_1 @KristaCarrNB You are correct. Most people (65% in 2024) who receive MAID in Canada have primary diagnosis of cancer. #tc.5" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">canada.ca/en/health-cana…

@MAiDCanada2016 Thank you for providing all this information. It’s incredibly frustrating to take the time to answer these surveys only to discover the government completely ignores the results!

The Alberta government conducted a major public survey on MAiD in 2024, received more than 23,000 responses, and never publicly released the results. We obtained the full survey through a freedom of information request. Our analysis looks at: • support for MAiD • opposition to several proposed restrictions • misinformation in the written comments • major problems with the survey’s design and framing Regardless of where someone stands on MAiD, the public should have had access to these results before Bill 18 moved forward. maidincanada.substack.com/p/results-from…

"The committee co-chairs have both said publicly that they oppose MAID MD-SUMC, and the lack of impartiality showed. Of the 38 witnesses who testified at the hearings, 28 were clearly opposed to expansion of MAID. Only one patient was allowed to testify, and she was opposed; those favouring MAID expansion were told there was not enough time to hear them. And while several psychiatrists spoke, no representative from the Canadian Psychiatric Association was invited." This piece by André Picard says it all. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl…

@rljcoelho You wonder — in your view do people who experience social and financial stressors have the right to make their own health decisions? Or just not the right to request MAID if they have a life limiting illness? What about chemo? Ventilation? Dialysis?

My 2024 article on discrimination-driven deaths through MAID 👇🏽 Cases reviewed by the MAiD Death Review Committee show people receiving MAiD for suffering driven by poverty, isolation, stigma, and lack of care. That is not compassion. It is discrimination and furthering neglect.

@rljcoelho It’s one person. Claire Brosseau is one person. We need safeguards in place but rights are at stake and we should not exclude people due solely to diagnosis. Cannot generalize to all people with mental illness. Everyone needs 1:1 assessment

For people asking my opinion on MAiD for patients with mental illness (MAID-SUMC), here is a 2024 column: The role of government is to stop dithering and mostly to get out of the way. The system we have now works well. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl… via @GlobeDebate

Bill 18, the so-called “safeguards” act to restrict access to Medical Assistance in Dying, is likely to pass third reading in the next few days. This is the final step before heading to the Lieutenant Governor for Royal Assent. In pushing ahead, Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party (UCP) is ignoring the real concerns raised by the Alberta NDP, the Alberta Medical Association, ALS Society of Alberta, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and most importantly, many Alberta residents. maidincanada.substack.com/p/alberta-forg…
