I was so optimistic to read the 1st part of the headline, but lost faith when I saw the word "challenges." Words like "hurdles" & "feud" (in the article) made me realize that the middle class will continue to struggle to find affordable housing. Oh well. nytimes.com/2026/03/12/us/…

My plea to local, state, and political officials? Pick ONE area (K-12, college, jobs, housing, debt, savings) and vow to enact policies or pass laws that make life more affordable for America's middle class.

The best kept secret in our tax laws? About 90% of housing subsidies go to rich people. Bipartisan, liberal, & libertarian groups (incl. @BPC_Bipartisan, @TaxPolicyCenter) & Congress itself all report that US tax laws don't make housing affordable for the middle class.

A recent @washingtonpost, @ABC, Ipsos poll finds that most middle-class Americans think taking a weeklong vacation or buying a new car is completely out of reach. It's EVERYTHING.

Affordability is more than just a buzzword. As I argue in my new book, the middle class is struggling & angry b/c they can’t find good jobs or affordable housing. They don't have savings & they’re drowning in debt. America must do better.

As I explain in my new book, affordability is a winning term b/c of how hard it is for people to acquire the essential markers of a middle-class standard of living, like affordable housing, childcare & being able to save & avoid debt.@juliezweil

“Affordability” is the political word of the moment. The prices of everyday essentials, such as housing and health care, are at the top of Americans’ concerns. And “affordability” has become many politicians’ favorite term to refer to the issue. wapo.st/3MMYP8z

Affordability is more than just a “buzzword.” As I argue in my recent book, even a strong stock market hasn’t helped America’s middle class b/c workers can’t find good jobs, affordable housing, or child care. They don't have savings & they’re drowning in debt. @timjhogan

The affordability "hoax" is forcing middle-class Americans to sell their plasma to cover basic expenses, from medical bills, to day care expenses, to clothing for their kids. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/a… via @nbcnews

This is huge, mostly because this signals that housing unaffordability is a bipartisan issue. Lots of things we're seeing now are partisan - the affordability crisis middle-class families are facing isn't one of them.

This deserves more attention... Last night the House passed the "Housing for the 21st Century Act" by a remarkable 390-9 vote. If it becomes law, it would make it easier to build more housing in the United States (esp. smaller "starter homes"). @Neil_Irwin & @Courtenay_Brown have a good summary of the bipartisan bill here: axios.com/2026/02/10/rea…
