I am happy to announce my first paper is on the arXiv today! We present a new model for nuclear star cluster formation within dwarf galaxies using high-resolution cosmological simulations, including observational properties and links to globular clusters: arxiv.org/abs/2405.19286

@DavidDeutschOxf @PhysInHistory I've never believed it either and I suppose we'll never know what Oppenheimer thought. But according to his brother, Frank, what he said was `It worked' (youtube.com/watch?v=FNbhfK…, 51:45).

@PhysInHistory On reflection, I think this account is implausible. Does any other witness's account mention laughing and crying? A moment of silence, yes. But suddenly remembering a line from Hindu scripture that he hadn't thought of beforehand – no.

We waited until the blast had passed, walked out of the shelter and then it was extremely solemn. We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita: Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, he takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

@avt_im If it's the Bayesian aspect that @predict_addict objects to, may I point out that Gaussian process emulation can be couched in purely classical terms as the best linear unbiased predictor for some second-order random variable. The assumption of a Gaussian prior is not needed.

@kjb_astro @ESAGaia I don't often laugh out loud when checking the Arxiv in the morning. But `coming back stronger than a nineties trend' did it for me today.

Binary stars: coming back stronger than a 90s trend
(I wrote a review on what @ESAGaia has done for the binary star field over the last decade.)

Paper day! My paper with John Magorrian, 'Mapping dust in the giant molecular cloud Orion A' (arxiv.org/abs/2401.12976) has been accepted by MNRAS and is on the Arxiv.

Today my first first-author paper hit the arXiv 😄: An action-based dynamical model for M31-like stellar halos.

Richard Dawkins was always an intellectual hero of mine and I've read every book he's published. His radicalization by transphobes over recent years is really sad-making.

Have you ever in your life encountered a genuine woman who would stand up before a crowd and incite them to punch people "in the fucking face"? No, I thought not. unherd.com/thepost/calls-…

My tour of @AuschwitzMuseum lasted three hours. Of the 1.1 million people murdered by the SS 80 % spent less time there than I did.

'Chanting and whooping'. Some of it from me. A joy to be part of @OULGBTQ's Oxford Trans+ Pride today.

@michelle_lmc And you don't even need to click the link to know who wrote the article.

Here's the Oxford SU's statement. oxfordsu.org/news/article/6…

The problem is this isn't true. The Oxford SU has suspended its relationship with the OU because of worries about bullying, sexual harassment, discrimination and data privacy. Their decision had nothing to do with Stock. telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/1…
