@peter_emd @MaxCRoser The issue with these kinds of articles is that they seem to always just "trust that it's all going to be okay" while they promote infinite growth...

@peter_emd @MaxCRoser So hopefully we'll figure it out with new technologies and just grow indefinitely because we can just use a different type of resource soon (hopefully)? Very solid. Oh let's also hope climate disasters don't wipe us out by the end of the century too

Lots of articles out there that explain that 'you can't have infinite growth on a finite planet'. Are there articles out there in which someone says that we should seek 'infinite growth'?

@killerstorm @AndrewConway @ESYudkowsky The research shows that people on lower incomes use the cash to buy assets, not just "more food and clothes" (ignoring booze because that is an incredibly presumptive and factually wrong opinion). They do get wealthier and live more stable lives. Source: givedirectly.org/about/

@AndrewConway @ESYudkowsky unlikely they'll get any wealthier. Some of them might, that's the whole story with microlending, but most will probably just buy more food, booze or clothing.

Wow! That's enough to give 8 billion people on Earth each over $100! Think of what percentage of your annual income $100 is! No wonder rich people rule everything when they have that much of the wealth!
Jon Erlichman@JonErlichman

The 10 richest people are worth $943 billion: 1) Bezos: $186 billion 2) Gates: $121 billion 3) Zuckerberg: $99 billion 4) Arnault: $83 billion 5) Buffett: $80 billion 6) Ambani: $80 billion 7) Musk: $77 billion 8) Ballmer: $75 billion 9) Page: $72 billion 10) Brin: $70 billion

Today I am releasing my final report as UN Special Rapporteur. I find that global poverty is rising, and that a decade of misplaced triumphalism has exacerbated the worst impacts of the pandemic. My statement: chrgj.org/2020/07/05/phi…. The full report: chrgj.org/wp-content/upl….

As the NHS turns 72, it is the perfect moment to recall the poignant words of Harry Leslie Smith, the greatest prophet of the Bevanite era. His memories of poverty & illness before the NHS was created still haunt our political landscape, like a spectre.

As I'm closing in on 1m followers. As is my tradition when I'm near boundaries, to say THANK YOU I'll -Donate £1,000 to a charity chosen by my millionth follower. -Donate £1,000 to a charity chosen by a randomly picked existing follower (who names a charity in response to this)

A good example of the human brain using prior knowledge & mental models to fill in gaps of a low-res, noisy sensory input. This works well most times, but can fail on occasion. Useful to think about for AI development and for spread of misinformation on the internet.

I work for the Canadian federal government and they sent out an email with work at home guiding principles. It’s amazing to work for a place that speaks like this.

Pro tip. Use quotation marks to make your methods section more interesting. e.g. We "adjusted" for missing data. We adjusted for "missing" data. We adjusted for missing "data".

The Google Doodle today is a really cool infinite runner game with garden gnomes. But which gnome is best to choose? I played the game on the same level 25 times with each gnome, recording all my scores. Here are the score distributions.

Not an expert, but best I could find: Because the healthcare systems in remote areas aren't equipped to deal with an influx of cases, Covid or otherwise. The Highlands: 7 beds for level-3 critically ill patients (+ less than 20 ICU/HDU beds) Source: google.com/url?sa=t&sourc…

I get why popular beaches & parks are forbidden: they attract crowds. But what’s wrong with a lonely wilderness? Dartmoor? Cuillins? Brecon Beacons? Isn’t it crowding with others that should be forbidden, rather than leaving home? Sincere question seeking friendly expert answer
