In several African countries, authorities have blacked out the web during elections to prevent real-time reporting of results or mobilization against irregularities. Nigeria is not immune; during the #EndSARS protests in 2020, partial restrictions foreshadowed broader controls. Now, with insecurity in northern regions leading to telecom blackouts in unserved areas and thousands of communities remaining digitally isolated, the stage is set for a nationwide switch-off. Many fear this could enable rigging by disconnecting voters from live updates, opposition coordination, and international oversight. Imagine polling stations where results are tampered with in the shadows, without citizens able to verify or share evidence online. In previous elections, glitches in electronic transmission raised suspicions. For 2027, concerns about government plans to “secure” the process through network blackouts are growing louder, following regional patterns where shutdowns empower incumbents to manipulate outcomes. swears , apart from the government, we citizens are also part of the problem. My mum went to the market to buy foodstuff and told me she got a whole bag of rice for ₦56,000. Meanwhile, pepper, beans, and groundnut oil were surprisingly cheap and affordable. But tell me why people selling food are still selling rice meals at ₦300 and above? Some even ₦150–₦200 no longer exists. Yes, the government is not doing enough, we all know that. But the truth is, some citizens are not helping matters either. Even when things become cheaper, prices don’t come down. It’s just pure wickedness at this point. We complain about hardship, yet we contribute to it ourselves. Nigeria will be better the day we all decide to do right.
