The Justice Department has identified three hundred eighty-four foreign-born Americans whose citizenship it wants to revoke. Thirty-nine U.S. attorney offices across the country now have civil litigators assigned to file the cases.
Federal law allows denaturalization when someone obtained citizenship fraudulently. Sham marriages. Withholding information that would have made them ineligible. Crimes committed before naturalization that were never disclosed.
That is the law. It has always been the law. What is changing is that it is actually being enforced.
For decades the United States handed out citizenship on the assumption that the paperwork was clean. Immigration judges approved. Applications got rubber stamped. Nobody went back and checked. The result is a naturalized population where an unknown number of people lied their way in and were never held to account.
