Let me introduce the racehorse Inari One. 🏇 His career record stands at 12 wins from 25 starts, including three GⅠ victories. Born in 1984, he was a small horse but possessed tremendous power and a fiery temperament. Along with Oguri Cap and Super Creek—both a year his junior—he was one of the horses that underpinned the horse racing boom of the early Heisei era, collectively known as the ‘Heisei Big Three’. He came up through the so-called regional racing circuit, and after making his debut at Oi Racecourse, he went on an unstoppable run, racking up eight consecutive wins. Although he went through a dry spell for a while afterward, his team declared that if he won, they would aim for the JRA Tenno Sho (Spring), and he went on to compete in and win the Tokyo Daishoten. This led to his transfer to the JRA. However, once the transfer was complete, Inari One struggled to adjust to the change in environment, lost a significant amount of weight, and tended to rush in races, resulting in two consecutive losses. Consequently, it was decided to change jockeys before the Tenno Sho, the race they had been targeting, and Yutaka Take—who would later become a legendary jockey—was chosen to ride him. Yutaka Take had originally been scheduled to ride Super Creek, but since Super Creek was recovering from an injury at the time, Take happened to be available. With a new jockey in the saddle, Inari One won the Tenno Sho in a course-record time, securing his first victory in central racing with a GⅠ win. By also winning the Takarazuka Kinen in his next start, Inari One had claimed two GⅠ victories by this point, proving that his success was no fluke. However, from this point on, he would face off against the era’s top contenders—such as Super Creek and Oguri Cap—who were returning from a layoff. With Super Creek’s return, Inari One’s jockey has been changed from Yutaka Take to Masato Shibata. Inari One made his autumn debut in the Mainichi Ohkan, where he faced off against Oguri Cap—another idol horse with a background in regional racing—and finished a close second. Perhaps due to the toll of that grueling race, his form dipped, resulting in a sixth-place finish in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) and an 11th-place finish in the Japan Cup. However, in the Arima Kinen, Inari One prevailed in a fierce battle between the “Heisei Big Three, ” winning the race with extraordinary burst speed and setting a new course record in the process, becoming only the fourth horse in history to win the Grand Prix in both the spring and fall seasons. Having won three GⅠ races in a single year, including the Arima Kinen, with two of those victories setting new course records, Inari One was recognized for these achievements and named Horse of the Year. After retiring from racing, he became a stallion, but he did not achieve the level of success initially expected of him. Following his retirement as a stallion, he moved from one facility to another for a time, and his situation remained unstable, causing concern among his fans. However, once he was taken in by a guesthouse in Hokkaido and began receiving a subsidy for meritorious horses, he finally found a permanent home. He lived a long life, passing away at the age of 33. #umamusume
