When it comes to tackling climate change, we believe we cannot manage what we cannot measure. This is where environmental accounting and reporting comes in. We had @AmyLuers, @Microsoft's Global Director of Sustainability Science, break it all down for us. 🧵⬇️

@GlobalEcoGuy Thank you Jon. That BP narrative I always found unsettling as it clearly is not the whole story. Valuable science has been done to create a valuable framework, that was then co-opted and used to spend n a narrative. These ultimately end up on multiple layers of spin,

The current methods of greenhouse-gas accounting are broken. Thanks to @amyleurs and coauthors we have a new article in @Nature outlining the need for reliable, interoperable systems. This needs to be the foundation of a net zero carbon economy. nature.com/articles/d4158…

3/4 The climate crisis requires: (1) Cut emissions of GHG emissions to near zero by mid-century & (2) Invest in nature for carbon removal and storage, and climate resilience & (3) Invest in permanent carbon removal tech, to enable scale deployment within a couple of decades.

2/4 Protecting and restoring forests can reduce peak warming and build climate resilience. But there is a catch: Temporary storage of carbon in trees only decreases peak warming if fossil fuel emissions to near zero. (lnkd.in/gzV9vmfd)

1/4 @hausfath, in his opinion in @nytimes, correctly argues humanity cannot rely on trees for permanent carbon removal. 𝘐 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦. However, humanity must rely on trees and other natural systems for tackling the climate crisis. nytimes.com/2022/06/04/opi…
