She learned to use a tiny plastic face mask, air bag and suction device through a program called Helping Babies Breathe. It was an international collaboration with USAID, @SavetheChildren, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Laerdal Foundation of Norway and others.

My @suntimes OpEd: In a village in Bangladesh I met a 6-month old baby who literally would have died if not for the health worker trained through a USAID-supported program. Wiping out almost all of #USAID means more people - like an innocent baby - will die.

From the Sun-Times commentary section: Sun-Times reporter Amy Yee witnessed firsthand how programs funded by U.S. Agency for International Development saved lives and improved the standard of living for many people in Bangladesh and other countries. trib.al/7p7vx4q

Our union received the bittersweet news today that there will not be any layoffs at the Chicago Sun-Times. But 16 beloved Guild members have taken buyouts, as have several non-union newsroom colleagues. This is the biggest hit to our newsroom in at least 12 years.

We’re at Navy Pier today telling the CPM Board to keep their promise of finding non-labor cuts to save public media and the people who make it. Seven Guild members have taken buyouts, another 11 have applied, and at least 21 non-Guild staff have too.

@Suntimes + @WBEZ under Chicago Public Media is largest nonprofit newsroom in US, infused with $61m from philanthropy incl @macfound. But now CPM execs want to cut ~$5m thru @suntimes buyouts + likely layoffs that will decimate us. Support @CSTGuild's fight to save public media!

Seven Sun-Times Guild members have decided to take buyouts in the past six weeks — and we expect more to exit soon. Chicago Public Media told us they needed to slash $3-5 million through buyouts and other cost cuts. Today, we’re concerned management might resort to layoffs.

We are disappointed by today's announcement that Chicago Public Media will seek voluntary staff buyouts. Our union is frustrated that our organization's management did not secure more revenue in the past three years to avoid staffing cuts and secure our sustainability.
