Grigori Rasputin, photographed in 1916, the year of his death.... Grigori Rasputin was born in a small Siberian village and rose from obscurity to become one of the most controversial figures in late Imperial Russia. A wandering mystic with intense religious conviction, he gained a reputation as a spiritual healer after a pilgrimage in his late twenties. His influence grew dramatically after he appeared to ease the suffering of Tsarevich Alexei, who had hemophilia. Whether through calming the family, discouraging harmful medical treatments like aspirin, or coincidence, Rasputin’s presence coincided with the boy’s improvement, securing the deep trust of Tsarina Alexandra. Inside the palace he was called “Our Friend.” Outside it, rumors of corruption, sexual misconduct, and political manipulation flourished. While he likely accepted gifts and cultivated influence, modern historians generally agree he did not secretly control Russian government policy as legend suggests. In December 1916, aristocrats assassinated him, shooting him multiple times. Just over a year after Rasputin’s death, the Russian Revolution toppled the Romanov dynasty, and the imperial family he had once advised was executed in 1918. © History Pictures #archaeohistories

A centuries old lock of hair, presented to an anthropologist by an Aboriginal man, has led to new DNA analysis that shows Aboriginal Australians are the World’s Oldest Society. The group was the first to split after a single wave of migration out of Africa took place between 51,000-72,000 years ago, study shows. For centuries, Aboriginal Australians have said they belonged to the oldest sustained civilization on the face of the Earth, citing their culture and history of oral storytelling that stretches back tens of thousands of years. Now, one of the most extensive analyses of Indigenous Australian DNA to date suggests that they've been right all along. By analyzing DNA from 787 people from 270 modern cultures spread across the world, a group of scientists identified and tracked ancient genetic mutations that they believe mark when different ethnicities diverged as their ancestors settled across the world, Benson reports. Aboriginal people of Australia DNA confirms that the indigenous culture is one of the most ancient cultures on earth, they are from Africa. Using this genetic tracing, the researchers suggest that the first Homo sapiens began leaving Africa between 51,000-72,000 years ago. And the ancestors of Indigenous Australians were the first group to split off from that migration. Thus, confirming that they may have the oldest continuous culture on the planet. This study confirms our beliefs that we have ancient connections to our lands and have been here far longer than anyone else,” Aubrey Lynch, an Indigenous elder from Australia's Goldfields region, tells Devlin. Indigenous Australians were the first modern humans to traverse an unknown region of Asia and Australia, says Professor Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen, who led the study. “It was a really amazing journey that required exceptional survival skills and courage,” he says. A century-old lock of hair, presented to an anthropologist by an Aboriginal man, has led to the discovery has the ancestors of Aboriginal Australians. While the study appears to seal the deal on the world’s oldest society, it raises new questions. The genetic analysis also showed that the ancestors of Indigenous Australians and Papuans may have mated with a previously-unknown human species, just like ancient Europeans interbred with Neanderthals. Though scientists are just now getting hints at who these mysterious human species were, further genetic analysis could shed light on another ancient relative. #archaeohistories

Using high-resolution photographs and modern image-analysis techniques, a chemical engineer has reexamined the Shroud of Turin and concluded that its faint body image is best explained by a short, intense burst of radiation, rather than paint, scorching, or natural decay. The research, published in June 2025 in the International Journal of Archaeology, analyzed both visible-light and ultraviolet images and found that the image’s pixel intensity naturally encodes real three-dimensional depth information. This is the same effect first observed in 1976 when a NASA-developed image analyzer produced a lifelike relief of the body from the shroud’s data. When the image data is mathematically processed, it forms a coherent height-relief map of a human body that exists only at the outermost surface of the linen fibers, penetrating just micrometers into the cloth. According to the paper, radiation is the only known mechanism capable of producing both the shroud’s grayscale image and its intrinsic 3D information without saturating the fabric. The study does not claim proof of a miracle and does not directly challenge the medieval carbon-dating results. Instead, it argues that whatever formed the image behaved like an energetic radiation event, and that direct testing of the cloth is now the only way to determine its exact nature. If the image wasn’t painted, burned, or caused by slow decay, what kind of event could realistically leave a radiation-like imprint on linen 2,000 years ago? #archaeohistories

@DustBaker Kerby could take a year off and he'll still retire with more INTs than anyone who's ever played for the Vikings.

#Lions All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury and could be placed on IR, which would end his regular season. Joseph, who led the NFL in interceptions last year, has not played since Week 6.
