Niagara Falls is a famous group of three waterfalls located on the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York State in the United States. It is formed by the Niagara River as it flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, creating one of the most powerful natural water flows in North America. The site has been known for centuries and remains a major natural landmark. The three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls are Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Horseshoe Falls is the largest and most powerful, and it sits primarily on the Canadian side of the border. American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are located on the U.S. side and are separated by small islands, giving them a more jagged and segmented appearance compared to the broad curve of Horseshoe Falls. The enormous volume of water flowing over the falls creates a constant roar and a large mist cloud that can often be seen rising high into the air. This mist sometimes produces rainbows when sunlight passes through it, adding to the dramatic scenery. The force of the water has also carved the underlying rock over thousands of years, slowly shifting the position of the falls upstream. Beyond its natural beauty, Niagara Falls is also an important source of hydroelectric power. Both Canada and the United States have built power stations along the river to harness its energy for electricity generation. This development made the falls one of the earliest large-scale examples of hydroelectric power use in North America. Today, Niagara Falls attracts millions of tourists every year. Visitors come to view the falls from observation decks, ride boats such as the Maid of the Mist, and explore surrounding parks and attractions. Its combination of natural wonder, geological significance, and human engineering makes it one of the most famous waterfalls in the world.
