If you’re under $50k a month and thinking about hiring an agency, read this before you waste your money.
A few years ago, I took on a client doing $18k a month.
They wanted to “scale fast” with paid ads.
We tried everything.
New offers, new creative, more budget.
The truth was, they didn’t need more traffic.
They needed a better product, a clearer offer, and a real understanding of their customer.
We both lost.
They burned cash, I lost sleep, and we both walked away thinking “agencies don’t work.”
Agencies are amplifiers.
They can pour fuel on a fire.
But there already has to be a fire.
Below $50k a month, the thing breaking your growth is almost never just “more traffic.”
It’s your offer, product, or economics.
Hiring an agency too early just makes you go broke faster.
Here's why we usually draw the line at about $50k a month:
1. The math doesn’t work for you.
Good agencies are expensive for a reason.
At $20k a month revenue, you simply can’t fund a serious media budget, a senior team, and enough time to iterate.
You get shoved to a junior, on a tiny budget, under massive pressure.
Nobody wins.
2. Stage mismatch.
Before $50k a month, most brands are still figuring out who their best customer is, which hero products actually move, and basic unit economics.
Agencies are force multipliers.
They multiply clarity & product-market fit or they multiply confusion & churn.
3. Emotional mismatch.
At low revenue, every dollar feels like life or death.
That leads to “we need profit in 30 days or we’re out,” constant offer changes, price changes, and founder panic if week 1 ROAS isn’t great.
That is the worst environment to do smart testing and scaling.
Are you agency-ready? Here’s the checklist:
- Consistently doing $50k–$500k a month
- Can commit 10–20% of revenue to growth (ads + agency) for 3–6 months
- Proven demand: organic, repeat buyers, or decent retention already
- Healthy gross margins so you can afford paid acquisition
- Site isn’t a disaster: page speed, mobile, checkout, basic CRO handled
- You can handle a 30–50%+ lift in orders without imploding CX or inventory
- You see marketing as an investment, not a lottery ticket
- You’re okay with learning, iterating, and compounding. Not just trying to "get rich quick"
If you can check these boxes, we can probably make you a lot of money.
Not there yet? Here’s your roadmap:
Phase 1: 0–$20k a month
Obsess over product, reviews, retention. Learn Meta/Google basics yourself with a tiny test budget. Get scrappy with UGC, organic, and email.
Phase 2: $20k–$50k a month
Double down on the 1–2 products and 1 avatar that’s working. Clean up your site and tracking. Maybe hire a freelancer or consultant for a few sessions.
Phase 3: $50k–$500k a month
Now you’re ready for a growth partner. An agency finally has enough signal and budget to multiply.
Bottom line:
Agencies are amplifiers.
If you’re not ready, you’re just paying to go broke faster.
