If you haven't tried @shortcatapp, you should :-) Recently it's been receiving some great updates, and its developer @chendo is top-notch. He dove deep into a wonky SplitView accessibility issue to make @shortcatapp work for my legacy @Outlook workflow 👏💯
@ShriramKMurthi@neeldhara@rsms@alfredapp The keyboard shortcut is command+shift+/
It focuses the Help menu's Search field. From there, you can arrow through the menu, or enter a search term to quickly jump to menu commands.
@neeldhara@rsms@alfredapp Option+shift+? doesn't seem to do *anything* on my machine (11.6 Big Sur). Sorry, it does, in that it generates the ¿ character…
I should check out packal. The thing is, I've just gotten used to not using the menu AT ALL on macOS: the mousing just beat it out of me!
If you are unhappy or disappointed with the state of macOS, what were your favorite features of Mac OS of the past? What would you hope to see in a new OS of tomorrow, niched at computer professionals?
@rsms For making the menu bar black w/o enabling dark mode, maybe check out topnotch.app
It’s not an excuse (I feel ya on the complaints), but a possible workaround.
@chrisdrackett Can’t silence push motifs w/o also doing it on my iPhone. All the GUI is fluffy rounded with weird space in unexpected places → low info density. Can’t make the menu bar black anymore (w/o enabling dark mode.) Etc. Mainly I don’t like the “cutesy” GUI.
@_supermarin@orta@elementary That makes sense, and that’s what I was fearing. Menu-items search is an unsung here of macOS. An apropos-mode for all apps.
@andrewa2@orta@elementary I don’t think Gnome has something like that built into the shell (it’s not the apps supporting CMD+/, it’s macOS enumerating menu items). You can likely combine alfred/spotlight + this + more with rofi
Last year, I started making moves to use Linux more often as the Mac is starting to feel less valuable to me.
We’ve both been moving in different directions for a while, and 2020 gave me time to examine that relationship.

After some of the most exciting and challenging years of my career, that’s the end of my time at Robinhood. I’m still processing everything I learned, but I’m looking forward to sharing some of these lessons as they crystalize. I’ll be blogging here: secretartofscience.com
Looking for podcasts, ideally with a comic bent, to listen to while driving. Suggestions? I usually listen to Lovett or Leave It, Shutdown Fullcast, NatSecLaw podcast
I used to have this terminal that would pop down from the top of my screen when I pressed ctrl+~. Is there anything like that still that works with Catalina?
